Soon your smartphone won’t need a plastic SIM card. In fact, it may be sooner than you think when the eSIM will become the one and only way to link you phone number to your phone.
Research by software company Amdocs showed 79 per cent of customers are ready to ditch the SIM card and are open to an eSIM-only device.
Apple got the ball rolling last week with the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro – the models sold in the US will not have a SIM card tray.
That means a customer’s only choice will be an eSIM.
SIM stands for Subscriber Identification Module and is your telco’s way of identifying your number on its network.
An eSIM is a built-in chip that already available on most mid-tier and high-end phones.
Instead of inserting a SIM card, customer will simply scan a code to embed their SIM information to the phone’s eSIM.
The study showed customers are in favour of eSIMs for a number of reasons including the ability to instantly switch to another carrier – 25 per cent of Australians said this would be the biggest benefit.
One in five said an eSIM was less hassle than having to buy a plastic SIM and 14 per cent said not having to remove and insert a SIM and having a completely digital experience would be favourable.
And you’d also be saved from trying to find one of those pins to pop open the SIM card tray.
“As we continue moving closer to ubiquitous connectivity, this research illustrates the consumer’s enthusiasm for eSIM and the enhancements it brings to the user experience and sustainability,” said Anthony Goonetilleke, Group President of Technology and Head of Strategy at Amdocs.
“We’re seeing eSIM adoption accelerate across the telecoms sector and we expect this behaviour to continue as consumers and communications service providers become increasingly aware of the benefits and possibilities unleashed by this exciting new technology.”
Service providers see the introduction of eSIM as a way to redesign the customer journey and offer them flexibility and instant gratification.
