- RATING
The Oppo Find N6 is a flagship smartphone in every sense of the word with amazing design and build quality, two stunning displays, an outstanding camera system and a comprehensive set of features. We loved everything about this phone - except the price.
With the release of Find N6 foldable smartphone Oppo has demonstrated it can produce a remarkable flagship device that is a delight to use.
One of the most impressive things about the Find N6 is that you can hardly see the crease when you open the larger inside 8.12-inch foldable screen?
This isn’t Oppo’s first rodeo when it comes to foldable devices. It’s been at it for years and it has perfected its technology in the Find N6.
It also has an excellent ColorOS UI, outstanding battery life and super-fast charging along with a stunning Hasselblad camera system.
But it’s a shame it is so expensive.
The Oppo Find N6 with 512GB storage is a whopping $3,299.
In comparison the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 with 512GB storage and 12GB RAM is $2,799.
DESIGN
The Oppo Find N6 has a front 6.62-inch display and an internal 8.12-inch display when opened.
The displays themselves have rounded corners while the front of the device has squared-off edges on the left hinge side and rounded corners on the other side.
One of the first things that strikes you is just how thin the device is, even in the folded state it is just 8.93mm.
And when it’s opened it is just 4.21mm.
So don’t for a minute think of this as a bulky device, it’s not much bigger or heavier (225g) than your current smartphone.
The front display is stunning and clear and is wide enough for you to get most things done like replying to messages and taking phone calls and even running all your apps.
This meant we didn’t have to open the device all the time to get simple things done.
Opening the Find N6 was always a pleasure and something we wanted to do rather than needed to do.
Speaking of that larger inner screen, it can be a workspace or a playground.
Users can run multiple apps at the same time but also enjoy games and content on a much larger scale.
The inner display has Oppo’s zero feel crease, which means not only can you hardly see it but you can also hardly feel it when you run your finger across the touchscreen.
Oppo is using auto-smoothing flex glass, which makes the panel not only stronger but also stays consistently flat every time it’s unfolded.
You can also write on the internal screen with Oppo’s AI pen, which is sold separately.
The device also has IP56 water and dust resistance.
PERFORMANCE AND SOFTWARE
The Oppo Find N6 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 which offers peak performance across the board.
Everything is pretty snappy from unlocking the device to opening apps and switching between apps.
And it is powering not just one but two screens and has enough grunt to run the latest games which can be enjoyed on the larger inner screen.
We love the fact that we could run multiple apps at the same time and move windows around and resize them to suit our workflow.
And thanks to the excellent performance, it all happened instantly and was smooth as silk.
It also helps that it has 16GB RAM under the hood to support multi-tasking and running more complex applications.
The device is running the ColorOS software, which is a clean and minimal interface that sits above Android.
It’s a compliment to say the interface just fades into the background and doesn’t get in your way.
AI
Oppo calls the Find N6 a pocket AI workstation.
The Oppo AI Pen is the first AI stylus that’s engineered for foldable devices and allows you to interact instantly with the device whenever inspiration strikes.
Unfortunately the Oppo AI Pen, despite the high price of the device, is not included in the box.
AI Painter can turn your doodles and hand-drawn notes into polished images, text and diagrams.
A feature we used often was AI recording, which takes advantage of the four onboard microphones to capture every voice in the conversation with remarkable clarity.
Then once we were done, it would then transcribe the recording and allow us to organise the notes and create summaries.
The AI mind space lets you capture notes and events and invitations with a single press before allowing AI to organise it automatically.
And from here you can ask questions and get answers based on what you’ve captured.
CAMERA
Another strong feature of the Oppo Find N6 is the impressive Hasselblad camera system.
It is made up of a 50MP ultra-wide camera, a 50MP periscope telephoto with 120x Super Zoom, and a 200MP Hasselblad ultra-clear camera.
It also has a 20MP inside camera and a 20MP front selfie camera.
Now this would have to be not only one of the best cameras on a foldable smartphone but one of the best camera systems on any smartphone.
We took hundreds of images in the weeks we’ve been using the Find N6 as our daily driver.
From selfies and portraits to landscapes, the results are simply stunning.
We loved the Hasselblad High Res mode, which allowed us to switch between 50MP and 200MP High Res to get that added quality.
Any pro photographer would tell you that detail is the ultimate goal for any image and that’s exactly what the 200 MP Hasselblad Ultra Clear camera delivers.
Pictures have stunning clarity and impressively natural and warm colours.
Taking an image with the 200MP camera means you have a lot of editing options, including zooming in on parts of the image and still retaining an incredible amount of detail.
You can also take 4K Ultra Clear Motion photos – a bit like Apple’s Live photo mode – and choose the best frame afterwards or keep them as mini movies.
The 50MP Periscope Telephoto was also quite impressive and it allowed us to get in close to those subjects and objects that weren’t exactly close to us.
We tested this feature in San Francisco and in Sydney and were pleasantly surprised by the results.
In Sydney we were at Accor Stadium watching the mighty South Sydney Rabbitohs and we’re able to zoom in on individual seats on the opposite side of the ground.
In San Francisco we were able to zoom in from Fisherman’s Wharf on the masts of the Golden Gate Bridge and the main tower at Alcatraz.
The final zoomed images were surprisingly sharp and clear.
One area the images could be improved was in low light situations. Images lacked the detail achievable with other similarly priced smartphones.
On the video side the Oppo Find N6 can also capture 4K Dolby Vision at 120fps.
The foldable form factor also comes into play when you want to shoot hands-free. You can easily position the device half unfolded to fit everyone in the frame and remotely activate the shutter.
You can also use the higher quality rear camera to capture your selfies with the front screen unfolded so you can see yourself and frame the image properly.
BATTERY AND CHARGING
The Oppo Find N6 has a 6000mAh silicon carbon battery which was enough power to last two full days.
The battery is on both sides of the hinge and can offer higher capacity thanks to its sheer size.
But not only did we enjoy excellent battery life but recharging was super-fast as well, thanks to the 80W SuperVOOC and 50W AirVOOC charging.
Oppo includes the 80W wired charger in the box and we were able to get 100 per cent charge from near zero per cent in about 45 minutes.
The 50W wireless charging would get you from 0 to 100 per cent in just 80 minutes.
The Oppo Find N6 is available now and is priced at $3,299.
VERDICT
The Oppo Find N6 is a flagship smartphone in every sense of the word with amazing design and build quality, two stunning displays, an outstanding camera system and a comprehensive set of features. We loved everything about this phone – except the price.
