Where is my flying car? Elon Musk answered that question in dramatic fashion when he unveiled the new Tesla Roadster that drove up a vertical ramp and flew back down to the stage.
Another demonstration saw the Tesla Roadster fly over other vehicles and land perfectly on the stage on the other side.
“Flying cars are real,” Musk declared during a live-streamed event to unveil its latest electric vehicle.
The technology in the new Tesla Roadster that allowed it to fly was developed with sister company SpaceX.
Musk said the car has air thrusters and main thrusters so “it can basically fly like a rocket”.
And it can also go from 0 to 100 km/h in 0.81 seconds.
The car even has a suction fan system so it can generate up to 2G of downforce and really hug the road for tight cornering at high speeds.
We saw this in action when the car drove up the vertical ramp and continued to an upside-down portion and hung there for a few seconds before literally taking off.
And while the demonstration was spectacular and jaw-dropping, the reality is Tesla will face a long winding road to achieve road legality.
Tesla wasn’t very forthcoming with detail on how much of this technology would be included in the vehicle, which the company says will go into production in 2028.
But Elon Musk said: “There’s going to be such a car that someone can own.”
