- RATING
Mammotion created a new higher standard for robotic lawn mowers with its Luba 3 AWD. If it can handle Australian lawns, you know you’re on a winner.
Tech Guide looked at the Mammotion Luba AWD 3000 and set it up in our backyard which is about 100 square metres.
The Mammotion Robot Lawn Mowers are designed for extra-large areas.
The number in the name – in our case 3000 – indicates the mower can handle an area that’s up to 3,000 square metres.
The Luba 3 AWD use the world’s first tri-fusion positioning system that combines 360° LiDAR with NetRTK and dual-camera AI vision.
Between these three technologies the mower always has reliable positioning in any conditions.
Setup involves finding a spot for the charging station and installing the RTK (Real Time Kinematic) beacon.
RTK is a positioning system that boosts GPS accuracy from a few metres down to just a couple of centimetres.
The mower itself needs other parts attached once you get it out of the large box but all the tools you need are provided.
Naturally, the charging stand must be connected to power but thankfully there was a long cord that you could run from the stand to the nearest power point.
The RTK Beacon also needed to be mounted on top of a pole, with a cable running to the charging stand as well.
On the design side, the mower looks a little bit like a Formula One car. And it weighs 19 kg.
It has a front sensor bar and side bars (these are what you attach when you get it out of the box) so it can know its limits.
The wheels have a dual loop design, which makes it look like there are two wheels in one.
This makes it easier for the AWD mower can easily handle all kinds of terrain.
The Mammotion Luba AWD 3000 can also handle slopes up to 38.6-degrees.
Once you’re all set up, it’s time to fire up the excellent companion app so you can connect the mower to your home network and get to work.
The first thing you need to do is map your lawn.
And the great thing about the Mammotion Luba 3 AWD is that, just like a robot vacuum, it can map your backyard on its own.
No need to drive it around. No need to lay out cables. It just does it all itself.
For us it did a great job recognising all the boundaries, including low-level pavers.
It’s a no-brainer that it’s going to see fences and other obvious boundaries but it also managed to pick up areas that it couldn’t access like paved areas and spots below trees and bushes.
In our case the mower got bogged in a sandy spot below a tree and once we pulled it out, it remembered not to go there again.
From the app you can set a schedule to decide when the mower goes out and you can also set the mowing height so you can choose how long you want to keep your grass.
Now there is no catch on the mower. It simply mulches and returns the clippings to your lawn.
In terms of performance the Mammotion Luba 3 AWD did an impressive job in our yard.
We wish it could have got a bit closer to the edges but that seems to be a common issue with all robot mowers.
But the Mammotion app allows you to edit your maps to make the mower come closer to those edges.
There were some sandy areas in our grass that it dug up while it was negotiating that part of the yard and we had to go back and level it back out with a shovel.
But it’s an all-wheel drive lawnmower and that was just a demonstration to have how easily it can traverse all kinds of rough terrain in Australian backyards.
It can also handle large yards thanks to the 15Ah battery, which offers up to 215 minutes of run time per charge.
There is a setting that restricts the mower from going out in the rain which is fair enough but we found after the rain we had to go into the settings to turn off that feature so we could get our mowing session started.
Another favourite feature of ours was the ability to watch the live view from the mower’s front camera.
This is handy when you want to check the position of the mower and see the progress.
It could also be used as another security camera on wheels to keep an eye on what’s going on in your yard while the Luba 3 AWD goes through its paces.
Our yard is probably on the smaller side compared to some of the yards that the robot mower can handle.
So even if you have a larger property with bigger lawns the Mammotion Luba3 AWD can handle it with ease, even over rough terrain and steep slopes.

The bottom line is the robot mower can truly take over the lawn mowing duties.
Yes, you’ll have to get in and tidy up the edges and other parts of your lawn afterwards but the bulk of the work is already done for you.
The Mammotion robot mower is not cheap – the review unit that we were sent is the Mammotion Luba 3 AWD 3000 and that’s priced at $4,899.
The question you need to ask yourself is, “How much is my time worth?”.
If this can take your place mowing your lawn then that’s time you can spend doing other things.
Or if you already spend money on a lawn mowing service then you could justify the cost that will eventually pay itself off over time.
