Aussie wins film festival with movie shot on Nokia Lumia 920 smartphone

An Australian filmmaker has won first prize at the Sundance London Film and Music Festival with a short film shot entirely on a Nokia Lumia 920 smartphone.

Jason van Genderen, based in Terrigal on the NSW Central Coast, won the prize with his film Red Earth Hip Hop which was shot in stunning areas in remote far north Queensland.

The film explores the influence of hip hop, which started in the Bronx, on the indigenous communities in regional Australia and how it helped youth reconnect with tribal elders and tell stories using this style of music.

Audiences were captivated with the film and amazed to learn it was shot on a mobile.

“Filming on a smartphone is such an unobtrusive way to capture a story,” Jason said.

“People find they open up a lot more in a documentary sense, talking to a device that they are used to seeing everyday as opposed to a big film crew and everyone starting to clam up and being more guarded with their story.

 “The technology in the Nokia Lumia 920 is stunning, such incredibly sharp pictures from such a tiny lens.

“It really was remarkable to see the picture on the cinema screen. For most audiences, they’d have no idea it came from a smartphone.”

The Nokia Lumia 920 is a Windows Phone 8 smartphone with a 4.5-inch display and an 8.7-megapixel PureView camera.

It has a Carl Zeiss Tessar lens with a 26mm focal length and an 8cm minimum focus range along with a true 16:9 sensor and optical image stabilisation.
