LG has showcased its expertise in the exciting new OLED (organic light emitting diode) television format with a panel that can stick to a wall like a fridge magnet.
The company is leading the market in OLED development and it has just unveiled a new 55-inch “wallpaper” panel that is just 0.97mm thick and weighs less than 2kg.
It can be attached and easily removed from the wall with a magnetic mat, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap News.
This opens lots of possibilities to make the TV a more subtle addition to a room’s décor although the inputs and processors would have to reside in an external box.
This latest concept panel is actually 77 per cent thinner than LG’s current svelte OLED panels which are 4.3mm thick.
OLED emits light on its own when a charge is passed through it so, unlike LED, it doesn’t require a backlight which is why it can be incredibly thin.
Apart from being thin, OLED’s other advantages are unbeatable black levels and remarkably vibrant colour.
LG has made a huge investment in OLED and it sees the format as the next big thing in televisions with the company aiming to sell more than 600,000 units worldwide in 2015 and 1.5 million in 2016.
Later this year LG will release a range of new OLED 4K Ultra High Definition TVs in Australia.
