Connectivity for Australian households set to explode with faster internet

Our appetite for connectivity and devices is set to dramatically increase within the next five years as more households are connected to faster broadband, according to the latest research by Telsyte.

Internet Uninterrupted: Australians Households of the Connected Future was a report commissioned by the NBN and developed by Telsyte.

It predicts Australian households will go from using an average of nine connected devices in the home to 29 by the year 2020.

The report says households will have 12 simultaneous applications connecting to the internet over multiple devices, up from the current eight.

This takes into account the increase in smart devices in our home from lighting to security systems and appliances.

“As Australian households embrace high-definition streaming video, online games and working from home with the help of cloud-based applications, the need for fast and reliable broadband will increase, especially during peak times when multiple applications are accessing the Internet at once,” Telsyte managing director Foad Fadaghi said.

“Telsyte research predicts the average household will see a 50 per cent increase in the number of peak simultaneous applications connecting to the Internet by 2020 as more personal devices, white goods, health monitoring equipment and many more ordinary devices in the home get connected.”

Telsyte took a look at five different households from today and predicted how they will change by 2020.

THE HECTIC HOUSEHOLD

Working parents with children living at home.

Today: They own entertainment devices that brings the family together and they consume and own technology for work and play.

Tomorrow: The Hectic Household will have an average of 19 apps running at once at peak times – up from 12.

NBNHouseholds1

THE CITY LIVING HOUSEHOLD

Highly social couple with no children

Today: They have embraced technology and have active, untethered lives with no kids and can afford to invest in new devices. They have a heavy reliance on mobile technology.

Tomorrow: City Living households will have 15 apps running at once at busy times, up from 11 today.

NBNHousehold6

THE SHARED HOUSEHOLD

Australians who share a place with their friends, family and other heavy users of the internet but they are on a budget.

Today: They own fewer devices but that make up for that with heavier internet usage especially with things like catch up TV and streaming video.

Tomorrow: Shared households will have an average of 12 apps running at the same time, up from eight today.

NBNHouseholds5

THE SUBURBAN DREAMER HOUSEHOLD

Parents with children living at home and who tend to leave work at the workplace.

Today: The few short hours from the time they get home to the time the children go to bed are the busiest for internet usage with everyone online at the same time.

Tomorrow: The Suburban Dreamer household will have an average of 13 applications running at once, up from seven in 2015.

NBNHouseholds2

THE EMPTY NESTER HOUSEHOLD

Older couples or families without children in their home

Today: They have moved to technology to get things done but don’t always have the latest devices. They are not the first to adopt technology, it’s narrower than other households, but their use of it is high.

Tomorrow: The Empty Nester Households will have an average of nine apps open simultaneously, up from six today.
