Telstra trials the future of 4G in Sydney and Adelaide

Telstra will begin testing what the company believes is the future of 4G technology connectivity in Sydney and Adelaide – the 700Mhz spectrum.

Trials are due to start in these two cities in mid-September with testing already underway in Perth, Fremantle, Esperance, Mildura, Mount Isa and Griffith.

The low band 700Mhz spectrum will not only offer faster data speeds and wider bandwidth but also allow signals to travel further and reach deeper into buildings.

Telstra says the 700Mhz will roll out further across Australia from January 2015.

Many of today’s latest smartphones are already 700Mhz compatible including the Samsung Galaxy S5, the HTC One M8, the LG G3 and the HTC Desire 610.

It is also expected the new iPhone – due to be launched next month – may also run on the 700Mhz 4G network.

“Telstra also has double the holdings of 700 MHz spectrum than the other carriers, and, this combined with our existing 4G services, doubles the 4G capacity of our network in these areas,” says Telstra’s group managing director, networks Mike Wright.

“(This) means we can support more customers, using more devices, doing more things at the same time. This is particularly important given the continued explosion of mobile data.”
