The podcast is nearly 10 years old – and more popular than ever
We’re closing in on the 10th anniversary of the podcast with users listening to 7 billion podcasts through iTunes and the dedicated iOS app this year alone.
The format has been enjoying a resurgence of late with programs covering every subject imaginable.
They can be heard at any time you want on your computer or iOS device like the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
Podcasts are available in the 155 countries where iTunes has set up shop.
Listeners are able to subscribe to their favourite podcasts so they are automatically pushed to the iTunes desktop app and to the iOS app as well.
Apple achieved a milestone last year when listeners notched up the billionth podcast subscription.
All up there are more than 285,000 podcasts and 9.2 million episodes of those podcasts available in more than 100 languages.
We’re responsible for producing two popular podcasts – our very own Tech Guide podcast and Two Blokes Talking Tech where editor Stephen Fenech teams up with fellow tech expert Trevor Long to discuss the latest tech news and reviews.
A new podcast called Serial has become a worldwide sensation and is the No 1 program in a number of countries including Australia, the US, Canada and the UK.
It tells the true story, in serial form, of the disappearance of a Baltimore teenager and the arrest of her boyfriend on suspicion of murder despite the fact she is nowhere to be found.
Each week host Sarah Koenig unfolds each new part of the story.
Serial has become so popular it became the fastest podcast to reach five million download and streams in the history of iTunes.
