Tech Guide managed to get their hands on the NVIDIA Shield portable gaming device at the recent Computex show in Taipei with the device due for release soon.
The device looks like a gaming controller but with one major difference – it has a flip-up 5-inch 720p resolution screen.
Running the latest Android’s Jelly Bean operating system, the NVIDIA Shield offers something smartphones and tablets don’t have – physical controls.
The screen on the product is also touch sensitive but having physical controls opens up a world of possibilities to create high quality games that can be played on the go as well as you would play them on your gaming console at home.
The device felt just like holding an Xbox or PlayStation controller and the screen was crisp and bright.
The speed of the device was also impressive and that’s thanks to the NVIDIA Tegra Quad Core Mobile Processor and the 2GB RAM.
And because it’s running Android users are able enjoy their favourite gaming apps in a way like never before.
There are a range of games which have been optimised for the NVIDIA Shield which can be accessed from NVIDIA TegraZone and include titles like Arma Tactics, Burn Zombie Burn, Dead Trigger 2, Grand Theft Auto Vice City, Real Boxing and Conduit.
Also onboard the NVIDIA Shield are speakers to offer audio quality never before heard on a portable device.
And of course there’s wi-fi connectivity with high bandwidth to allow for faster game streaming.
But it’s not just for gaming – the NVIDIA Shield can also be used to watch movies, listen to music, read ebooks and even access social media sites including Facebook.
The device is available for pre-order in the US and Canada only for $299 and is due to ship at the end of the month.
There is no word yet on when Australia will be able to purchase the product.
Other accessories include a carry case ($US39.99).
