Sony Mobile has raised the bar for video quality on a mobile device after unveiling the Xperia XZ Premium – the world’s first smartphone with 4K HDR display at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Also announced were the super mid-range Xperia XA1 and XA1 Ultra that build on the success of last year’s models.
The Xperia XZ Premium has a dazzling 5.5-inch 4K HDR display to provide the ultimate mobile viewing experience.
The display is enhanced with Sony’s Triluminos Display for mobile.
Amazon Prime Video will offer 4K HDR content from this year to stream or download on the Sony XZ Premium to enjoy it in full quality.
But the device also showcases Sony’s impressive new camera technology – Motion Eye which provides 960 frames per second super slow motion video capture.
Also onboard is Predictive Capture which automatically starts buffering images as soon as you open the camera and it detects motion even before you’ve hit the shutter.
The camera has 19-megapixel resolution – lower than the previous model – but it has 19 per cent larger pixels to capture more light and provide even more detail.
The Xperia XZ Premium has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 mobile platform making it one of the first devices to be compatible with the Gigabit Class LTE that’s capable of speeds up to 1Gbps.
XZ Premium is available in the mirror-like Luminous Chrome and in Deepsea Black.
The Xperia XA1 and XA1 Ultra have 5-inch and 6-inch displays respectively and have a borderless design so it looks like the screen is spilling off the edge.
They are powered by octa-core processors and include the Qnovo Adapt Charging technology to maximize the battery’s efficiency and life span.
On the camera side the XA1 and XA1 Ultra have inherited Sony’s excellent 23-megapixel sensor which offers incredible image quality and the ability to shoot in low-light situations.
And if you love your selfies, then the XA1 Ultra will be sure to please with its 16-megapixel front camera.
The XA1 has an 8-megapixel front camera.
The XA1 and XA1 Ultra will be running Android 7 Nougat operating system and the colour choices will be white, black, pink and gold.
In Barcelona, Sony Mobile also announced the Xperia Touch – an interactive projector that can transform any flat surface into a 23-inch high definition touchscreen.
The device can be used on walls, tables and kitchen benches and enable families to enjoy games, stream videos and communicate using messaging apps or Skype.
Xperia Touch is also compatible with the PlayStation 4 Remote Play and will run any app or game downloaded from the Google Play Store.
