Hello Moto! The Razr is making a comeback back as a folding smartphone
The Motorola Razr, once the hottest phone on the market before Apple launched the iPhone, is making a dramatic comeback as a head-turning foldable Android smartphone.
The device was unveiled in the US today and takes the classic flip phone form factor and completely reinvents it with a folding screen.
The catch phrase “hello Moto” – made famous during the heady days of the original Razr’s success in the early 2000s – will no doubt be echoing once again when the device is released in early 2020.
And Motorola has confirmed it will be released in Australia.
The new Motorola Razr has a clamshell design which is quite compact in the closed position – 7.2cm by 9.4cm – and there is also an external 2.7-inch QuickView screen and a 16-megapixel camera.
This outside screen can be used for answering calls and messages, controlling music playback and taking selfies.
But when it is opened up the it reveals a 6.6-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 2142 x 876 that takes up the entire space on the inside.
When the Razr is unfolded it is 17.2cm long.
It still has the same chin as the original Razr but this time out there is a fingerprint reader positioned there.
The internal OLED display has a moveable metal support to give it a sturdier feel when touching, pressing and swiping the screen.
The hinge that makes the internal foldable screen possible was designed by Motorola internally and, unlike the Samsung Galaxy Fold, folds completely flat.
In the case of the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the objective was to give customers a two in one device – a smartphone and a tablet in one.
But the Razr doesn’t take the same approach – it is offering a foldable screen that is about the same size as a regular smartphone but that can be folded to a smaller size when not being used.
The new Motorola Razr has no physical SIM card but has an internal eSIM.
It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720 processor with 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. There is also no microSD card slot.
The Motorola Razr will become the second foldable smartphone to hit the market after Samsung’s Galaxy Fold.
There is no Australian release date or pricing at this time but the Razr will be priced at $US1,499 when it goes on sale exclusively through Verizon in January.
