Telstra has upgraded its My Telstra app with new features to help customers stay safe online and avoid becoming a victim.
Device Security Essentials is free for all Telstra consumer and small business customers and is powered by McAfee.
Telstra research conducted in conjunction with YouGov found 86 per cent of Australians who own a smartphone have concerns about their personal information being compromised.
As a result, one in five (18 per cent) of Australians in the past 12 months have spent less time browsing the internet on their phones while almost a third of users are now using their phones just for calls and text messages.
We’re all aware of scams and have changed our behaviour to avoid them but some users are still using their phones in ways that may put their personal information at risk.
The research found almost 3 million Australian smartphone users are accessing free unsecure public wi-fi networks while paying bills or doing their online banking.
This could potentially expose your private details to a scammer.
The new Device Security Essentials on the My Telstra app can provide extra protection from online threats including:
– Wi-Fi Scan: Whether you’re at a café, airport, or on the go, this feature scans public Wi-Fi networks for security threats, alerting you to potential risks before you browse.
– Safe Browsing: Shop, read the news, or browse the web with more confidence by receiving timely alerts before accessing risky websites and links.
– Device Check: A security scan that helps detect and protect your device against suspicious apps and potentially harmful software.
For Android users this feature scans your phone and other devices for viruses and malware.
iPhone users already have some built-in security against malware, but Telstra’s Device Check feature will still scan your device software and passcode setting to make sure it is up to date.
Telstra customers need to upgrade to the latest version of the My Telstra app and turn on the new security feature in the Extras section.
