2020 has been a pretty crazy year so far and that’s been reflected in what Australians have searched for online. Google has just released its mid-year search trends during this extraordinary year so far.

We kicked off the year Googling the bushfires that had ravaged Australia over summer and the early portion of 2020.

And it’s no surprise that just when we got our breath back and the smoke had cleared, the coronavirus lands on our doorstep and dominated our searches.

And from this we were curious about social distancing, panic buying, hand sanitiser and toilet paper.

In fact, during the coronavirus crisis, searches on Google reached their highest peak ever.

The blue line represents coronavirus searches

There were also searches for how many cases of coronavirus in Australia, how did coronavirus start, how to make hand sanitiser and where to buy toilet paper.

At the same time there was also a 10-year high for searches related to craft and gardening.

Here are the most popular search topics from January 1 to June 30, 2020:

  1. Coronavirus
  2. Social Distancing
  3. Worldometers
  4. Panic buying
  5. Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)
  6. Black Lives Matter

  12. Zoom Video Communications
  13. Social Isolation
  14. Quarantine
  15. Toilet paper
  16. Furlough

  1. How many cases of coronavirus in Australia?
  2. What is coronavirus?
  3. How did coronavirus start?
  4. How many people have died from coronavirus?

  10. Is coronavirus airborne?
  11. How old is Addison Rae?
  12. How to make hand sanitiser.
  13. Is Kim Jong Un dead?
