LEGO is set for its biggest transformation ever with the launch of LEGO Smart Play – a new interactive technology that will bring creations to life like never before.
The new LEGO Smart Play technology was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas where the world famous toy company is appearing for the very first time.
The company says LEGO Smart Play is one of the most significant evolutions in the LEGO System-in-play since the LEGO minifigure was introduced in 1978.
LEGO smart play is designed to bring builds to life and turn your imagination and ideas into reality.
The Lego Smart Play platform includes the Lego Smart Brick, Lego Smart Tags and Lego Smart Mini Figures which can interact in real time to provide an all-new experience and new ways of exploration and storytelling.
LEGO Smart Play will include sensors, accelerometers, light sensing and the sound sensor along with a mini speaker that’s powered by an onboard synthesiser.
And it will also offer easy wireless charging.
This means the Lego Smart Play builds can respond to actions and movement and produce sounds and behaviour for a responsive and interactive experience.
The new Platform features more than 20 patented world firsts which have been shrunk down to fit inside a Lego brick.
The Smart Bricks require no setup and instantly aware of each other’s positions and orientations in 3D space through a highly accurate magnetic positioning system.
They communicate via a self-organising network that can adapt on the fly.
“For over 90 years, the LEGO Group has sparked imagination and creativity in children around the globe,” said Julia Goldin, Chief Product & Marketing Officer of the LEGO Group.
“As the world evolves, so do we— innovating to meet the play needs of each new generation.
“LEGO SMART Play is the next exciting chapter in our LEGO System-in-Play and something we are super excited about being able to bring to the world at this scale.”
The first Lego Smart Play building sets will feature Star Wars – the perfect playground which brings together characters, ships and adventures which will truly showcase the new technology.
The first LEGO Smart Play sets will include Luke’s Red Five X-Wing, Darth Vader’s Tie Fighter and the Throne Room Duel. They will go on sale on March 1, 2026.
Now instead of having to make the laser shooting sounds yourself, the Lego Smart Brick will provide them along with engine sounds and lights and even the hum of a lightsaber.
“We’ve worked with our incredible friends at Lucasfilm for over 25 years, and our focus has always remained on creating original, unique experiences for the fan community through our sets,” added Julia Goldin.
“With LEGO SMART Play, legendary stories and characters of the Star Wars galaxy will come to life like never before.”
The first LEGO Smart Play sets will be:
– LEGO Star Wars SMART Play: Luke’s Red Five X-Wing building set
A 584-piece set, including two SMART Minifigures (Luke Skywalker, in his iconic pilot suit, and Princess Leia), as well as Rebel Crew and Stormtrooper Minifigures. The set also includes Luke’s trusty droid companion, R2-D2.
This set comes with an Imperial turret, transporter and command centre, all of which unlock interactive features, such as laser-shooting sounds, engine sounds and lights plus refuelling and repair sounds, through the included LEGO SMART Brick, two LEGO SMART Minifigures and five LEGO SMART Tags.
– LEGO Star Wars SMART Play: Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter building set
Darth Vader and his fighter ship arrives as part of LEGO SMART Play and will allow fans to replay the most epic battles on behalf of the Galactic Empire.
This 473-piece set features a brick-built Rebel Outpost and an Imperial Fuelling Station, as well as a SMART Minifigure featuring Darth Vader and a Rebel Fleet Trooper Minifigure.
The roar of the twin ion engines comes to life, among other interactive features, with the LEGO SMART Brick.
– LEGO Star Wars SMART Play: Throne Room Duel & A-Wing building set
Fans will be able to re-enact and re-imagine one of the most memorable moments from the original Star Wars trilogy, the final lightsaber duel between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader at the end of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.
The 962-piece set comes with three SMART Minifigures featuring the characters Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine and Luke Skywalker.
You’ll be able to listen to hear the Imperial March with Emperor Palpatine sitting on his throne watching Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker do battle.
“The launch of LEGO SMART Play brings creativity, technology, and storytelling together to make building worlds and stories even more engaging, and all without a screen,” says Tom Donaldson, Senior Vice President & Head of Creative Play Lab at the LEGO Group.
“We truly believe we are setting a new standard for interactive, imaginative experiences and can’t wait to see this innovation in the hands of kids when we launch this year.”
