Tesla has revealed a re-engineered and re-designed model Y electric vehicle inside and out to achieve improved aerodynamics and ride comfort.
Tesla has taken many of the features and design decisions that were rolled out to the upgraded Model 3 and brought it to the Model Y to give it a sleeker and more refined look.
The front headlights and rear light bars have been completely redesigned to increase aerodynamics and thereby improve efficiency and range.
The front and rear of the new Model Y took its inspiration from Tesla’s Cybertruck and Cybercab designs.
The rear light bar goes across the entire width of the vehicle and measures 1.6m.
The new Model Y has had a significant suspension upgrade and has been tuned to improve the absorption of bumps on rough roads by 51 per cent to offer the driver and passengers a more comfortable experience.
On the inside, the Model Y interior has had a comprehensive enhancement and now has a customizable ambient lighting system which offers the effect of being more spacious.
The Model Y now includes a second row 8-inch display so rear passengers can play games and stream content as well as access climate controls.
The front seats now come standard with Tesla’s patented ventilation while the rear seats now have longer cushions and a new headrest design for better support and even greater comfort for those longer drives.
The rear seats also have electric recline adjustment via the buttons on the side of the seat.
The windscreen and glass roof has also been re-imagined and now include a coating which can reflect seven times more solar energy and reduce the amount of cooling needed for the cabin.
Tesla has also enhanced the sound system with even better acoustics and more detailed sound through the 16 speakers in the cabin and the subwoofer.
One of the biggest changes is the improvement in energy consumption thanks to the revision of every single subsystem that consumes energy.
It is also quieter in the cabin thanks to a 22 per cent reduction in road noise, a 20 per cent reduction in impact noise and a 20 per cent reduction in wind noise.
On the safety side, the new Model Y maintains the strength and safety of its predecessor and now includes a large crumple zone and single piece casting along with Autopilot HW 4.0 hardware and active safety functions which all comes standard with the vehicle.
There’s also a new front camera located under the front bumper to provide a better view while parking or making manoeuvres at lower speeds.
The camera even includes a self-cleaning function which aims a water jet to keep the lens clean.
The new Model Y Launch Series is a limited release and includes all paint options and 20-inch Helix 2.0 wheels as standard and comes with Launch Series badging on the rear lift gate puddle lamps and door sill plates.
Pricing starts at $63,400 for the Rear Wheel Drive and $73,400 for the Long Range All Wheel Drive.
If customers order now, the Australian website says it will be delivered in May.
