The second half of 2019 will see some massive smartphone releases from Apple, Samsung, Huawei and Google that will take the device to an all-new level – and here’s a sneak peek of all of them.
The next six months we’re going to see smartphones with improved camera systems, with 5G connectivity, with larger screens and some that can fold.
Here’s what we can expect:
SAMSUNG GALAXY FOLD
The Samsung folding device was unveiled back in February and has been delayed to address some issues which came up when they were placed in the hands of early reviewers and influencers.
Samsung says the device is ready for release but a firm launch date is yet to be announced.
The device has an external 4.6-inch outer display and then opens up like a book to reveal a 7.3 inch Dynamic AMOLED display with a 4:3 aspect ratio.
When folded, the device is 17mm thick but only 6.9mm when unfolded.
Expect to see the Samsung Galaxy Fold in Australia within the next three months.
SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 10
The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 will be unveiled in New York on August 7 (August 8 in Australia) with rumours suggesting there will be two versions of the device.
One will have a 6.3-inch screen while the Plus variant will reportedly offer a 6.75-inch display.
Under the hood, we expect the Galaxy Note 10 to be a powerhouse with an all new processor and a battery capacity of up to 4,500mAh.
Of course, the device will include the iconic S Pen so users can write and draw on AMOLED panel.
Design wise, if leaked images are to be believed, there will be curved edges to give the device’s screen and edge to edge look.
On the camera side, there will be a single hole punch in the middle of the display for the front facing camera and a triple camera system on the rear panel running down the top left edge.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 will also offer 5G connectivity.
APPLE iPHONE XI
There has been no shortage of leaks and rumours about Apple’s upcoming new iPhone with the biggest improvement certain to be an improved camera system.
The devices – the XIs and XIr (assuming they are called XI) – will have the same screen sizes as the current models – 5.8 inch and 6.5 inch for the Xis and 6.1 inch for XIr.
From the front, if the numerous reportedly linked images are valid, the new iPhone will look exactly the same as the current model.
But on the back users will see the square camera system layout.
For the XIs iPhones, there will be a triple camera system and a flash while the XIr will have a dual lens camera.
That means each iPhone, which will be 4G, will have one additional lens than the current model.
We’re expecting a lot of improvements on inside the including Apple’s latest processor and a faster Face ID camera.
We expect Apple will have a launch event in September with the phone going on sale later that month.
HUAWEI MATE X
The Huawei folding phone – the Mate X – stole the show at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February.
Revealed just days after the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the Huawei Mate X offered a different folding configuration with the screen on the outside of the device.
In the folded position there is a front 6.6-inch display and a rear 6.38-inch screen.
But when you open up the device you now have an 8-inch 4K screen to view content and for multitasking.
The Huawei Mate X will offer 5G connectivity and will be released in the coming months.
There is no indication of pricing but were expecting this to be the most expensive phone ever released in Australia.
HUAWEI MATE 30 PRO
According to reports, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro will have a 6.5 inch display wrapped in a glass and metal body.
Rumours suggest there will be a quad camera system with Leica lenses that will provide impressive photos and incredible video quality.
The Mate 30 Pro may also have a hole punch display for the front facing camera and an even larger and more efficient battery.
The device is likely to be released in October but may be delayed as a result of its issues with the US government.
GOOGLE PIXEL 4
Coming in October is the highly-anticipated Google Pixel 4 which has also leaked recently showing the screen layout of the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4XL.
In the images there are no notches but there will be room inside a large forehead for two front facing cameras and a facial recognition sensor.
There is also rumours the new Pixel phones will have hand gesture control and an in-screen fingerprint reader.
Other leaked lenders show a square camera system similar to what we can expect with the iPhone XI.
And naturally it will be the first device to run the new Android Q operating system.
