Apple Stores to kick off Augmented Reality art sessions

Apple will be offering new augmented reality experiences at Apple Stores around the world, including Australia, with interactive walks and in-store sessions featuring some of the world’s premier contemporary artists.

The in-store sessions will teach customers the basics of creating AR using Apple’s own coding software Swift Playgrounds.

There will also be an AR art installation viewable with the (AR)T Viewer in the Apple Store app on the iPhone and iPad in every Apple Store worldwide.

Apple has invited the New Museum, a popular contemporary art destination in New York, to select seven artists to participate in this experimental project that is free to the public.

The seven artists are Nick Cave, Nathalie Djurberg, Hans Berg, Cao Fei, John Giorno, Carsten Höller and Pipilotti Rist.

“Today at Apple offers a window into the creative arts made possible by our products and customers,” said Deirdre O’Brien, Apple’s senior vice president of Retail + People.

With “Through,” Carsten Höller takes viewers through a portal into a world with no perspective

“We hope attendees are inspired by the incredible AR creations in the [AR]T Walk and in-store installation, and we can’t wait to see what our visitors learn to create in the [AR]T Lab.”

From August 10, visitors to Australian Apple stores will be able to view Nick Cave’s Amass and interact with the installation.

Viewers will also have the opportunity to view and collect “Ikon Elements” right in the middle of the Apple Store.

If you’re in San Francisco, Paris, New York, London, Hong Kong or Tokyo. you can connect with these AR installations in public spaces including London’s Trafalgar Square, San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Gardens  and the Grand Army Plaza in New York’s Central Park.

“The New Museum has always led at the intersection of art and tech and we could not have asked for a better partner in Apple to support the surreal and fantastic visions of these pioneering artists,” said Lisa Phillips, Toby Devan Lewis director for the New Museum.

“Augmented reality is a medium ripe for dynamic and visual storytelling that can extend an artist’s practice beyond the studio or the gallery and into the urban fabric.”

Customers can also take part in AR Experiences which gives them hands-on time with whimsical objects and immersive sounds created by New Museum’s cultural incubator and educator Sarah Rothberg.
