Dyson has released the CameraJet sonic toothbrush that can not only clean your teeth but also identify the gaps between your teeth through the onboard camera and provide a precision floss as well.
The device has an integrated 100K pixel macro lens camera in the brush head that uses AI to detect, track and predict the gaps between teeth while you’re brushing and trigger a jet of mouth rinse precisely where it is required.
The result of six years of research, development and engineering, the Dyson CameraJet has reinvented conventional oral care.
A traditional sonic toothbrush bristles can stall on the tooth’s surface but Dyson’s variable sonic oscillation ensures bristles keep moving for a gentler brush on your teeth and gums.
And Dyson’s conical jet – rather than a narrower needle jet – can also puncture through and remove more plaque.
“Flossing is an awkward and time-consuming chore. Few of us do it even though we know we should,” says James Dyson, founder and chief engineer.
“Dyson engineers and scientists have spent well over a decade understanding oral care regimes and how nasties build up in the mouth.
“Our research has shown that people consistently miss the areas where plaque forms: the gaps between teeth.
“We wanted to solve three fundamental problems: how to see those gaps, remove plaque, how to improve cleaning performance while brushing.
“By combining a camera, machine learning, precision fluid dynamics, advanced brushing technologies, connectivity and Wi-Fi, Dyson CameraJet introduces an entirely new way to keep your mouth healthy.”
Dentists have recommended proper oral care include brushing, flossing and mouthwash twice a day but many struggle to do this each day.
Research shows 9 in 10 people do not floss regularly and we spend just 45 seconds brushing on average. Well below the recommended two minutes.
And that means we miss the gaps between our teeth where plaque can form and lead to other problems like bad breath, tartar build-up, gum irritation and tooth decay.
The Dyson CameraJet’s 100K pixel macro lens camera uses an AI machine learning algorithm and scans 28 live images per second to track and predict the gaps in your teeth in real time.
Within 100ms of detecting the gap, the device can aim a conical burst of mouthrise to floss while you brush.
The Dyson CameraJet has been trained on more than 470,000 dental images collected during development.
Dyson fluid dynamicists optimised the profile of the jet over years to remove plaque more effectively.
Typical water flossers uses a straight needle jet to pierce the plaque surface in one spot while Dyson’s conical jet can weaken the plaque’s grip and remove it all.
Onboard is a 12.5ml mouthrinse tank to dispense the recommended amount while you’re brushing to save you time.
It uses an anti-gravity tank with a diaphragm pump so there is always a flow of liquid instead of just shooting air blanks.
The charging stand can recharge the brush and also refill the tank as well.
The Dyson CameraJet brush head has been designed to reach a larger section of each tooth.
The dual bristle design is contoured to also clean along the gumline and lift surface stains to deliver cleaner and whiter teeth.
Each brush head has its own RFID tag to identify when it’s connected and how many cleans it has performed so it can send let you know when it’s time for a replacement.
The anti-stalling brushing motion developed by Dyson can prevent the bristles getting jammed on the tooth’s surface especially in hard to reach places.
Dyson has also come up with specially formulated non-foaming toothpaste and mouthrinse.
It’s non-foaming so the camera can see your teeth more clearly while brushing.
Its antibacterial formulation can reduce odour-causing bacteria and freshen your breath.
The Dyson CameraJet can connect to Wi-Fi at 2.4Ghz and Bluetooth to connect to the MyDyson app and provide a live view while you brush.
The app can also provide guided brushing routines, flossing insights and personalised feedback.
The Dyson CameraJet is available now and is priced at $799. Included is the toothbrush, charging dock, travel case and starter kit with Dyson Toothpaste and Dyson Mouthrinse.
It is available in either Ceramic Ultra Blue or Ceramic Pink.
