DJI’s new Osmo Action 5 Pro camera takes action photography to new heights – and depths

DJI has released its latest generation of action camera – the Osmo Action 5 Pro – which offers improved image quality, a number of enhanced features including subject centring and tracking and longer battery life.

Known for its excellent civilian drones and camera technology, DJI has taken action photography to a new level with the Osmo Action 5 Pro whether you’re in the ocean, in the snow or in the mountains.

Osmo Action 5 Pro has a new 1/1/3 sensor a 2.4μm pixel size and HDR (high dynamic range) of up to 13.5 stops.

Those specs make this the first action camera with features commonly found on professional cameras.

Images can also be captured in 10-bit D-log M and supports hybrid log gamma high brightness displays.

It can shoot high dynamic low light video at 4K 60fps so you’re still getting all the details in the shadows without overexposing the brighter parts of the image.

Also onboard is SuperNight mode which uses an AI-driven noise reduction algorithm to produce clean impressive results.

“By combining the image quality of a professional camera with the rugged durability of an action camera, we continue to innovate and set new standards for the industry,” said Paul Pan, Senior Product Line Manager at DJI.

“Creators have evolved, becoming more sophisticated in the stories they tell and the moments that they capture. Instead of making incremental improvements, we strive to push the entire action camera category forward and evolve with these creators.”

The Osmo Action 5 Pro also includes built-in subject centring and tracking – a first for an action camera – so creators can shoot without a gimbal.

This feature is powered by the 4nm high performance chip and machine learning algorithms which are used to intelligently detect the subject’s position and adjust the frame composition to keep what you’re shooting in the middle of the frame.

Osmo Action 5 Pro has the deepest waterproofing depth at 20m without a case.

The onboard colour temperature sensors also capture life-like colours under the sea.

Users can also set the camera to automatically start recording as soon as it is submerged and to stop after it surfaces again.

Under the hood is also a pressure gauge which records underwater depth and the duration of the dive to boost user safety.

The Osmo Action 5 Pro has larger front and rear screens which have been upgraded with OLED displays for greater brightness.

The actual size of the unit hasn’t changed but by increasing the screen size with narrower bezels, the screen-to-body ratio has increased by 16 per cent from the previous model.

The Osmo Action 5 Pro can connect directly to the DJI Mic 2 transmitter via Bluetooth so you can enjoy studio-quality audio recording.

The Osmo Action 5 Pro provides up to four hours of battery life – that’s a huge 50 per cent improvement on the previous model.

These power savings come courtesy of the low power consumption for nanometer chip and a physically larger battery.

And there’s also fast charging with a 15 minute charge delivering two hours of shooting time.

Other practical features for enhanced performance

  • 47GB Built-in Storage with a further optimized bitrate for smaller file sizes
  • High-Speed Transfer up to 80MB/s via Wi-Fi 6.0 or USB 3.0
  • Wi-Fi Livestreaming supported for various resolutions
  • Timecode allows footage to be quickly synchronized from multiple cameras
  • Live photos enable 3-second videos converted into dynamic photos
  • Pre-Rec starts recording moments before the official recording starts
  • Highlight to quick mark key moments to speed up the editing process

Osmo Action 5 Pro is available now from store.dji.com/au and authorised retail partners in two configurations:
