MG motor has launched its first full electric SUV in Australia at a price it hopes will make it more competitive as a mainstream choice for new car buyers.
The company says one of the barriers to adoption of electric vehicles for many customers has been the high upfront purchase price.
The MG ZS EV compact SUV has a driveaway price of $43,990.00 and is backed by an 8 year 160,000 kilometre battery warranty, a five year unlimited kilometre warranty plus five years of roadside assistance.
“Until now, buyers have had to pay a premium price for an EV. This has meant that only a small portion of the public can afford to buy an EV,” says Peter Ciao, CEO, MG Motor Australia and New Zealand.
“Our vision at MG Motor is to change this situation by making electric vehicles available and accessible to everyone.
“By removing the affordability barrier, we are seeking to fast track EV adoption in Australia and New Zealand.”
MG motor parent company, SAIC Motor, has already invested heavily in electric and battery production and it is just one of a handful of auto manufacturers to have its own complete EV supply chain.
The MG ZS EV has a diamond grille and jewel colour alloy rims as well as London Eye LED headlights.
Inside drivers will find soft materials, leather effects and intricate stitching to offer a premium finish to the family friendly SUV.
The vehicle has a 44.5 kW battery which gives the MG ZS EV a range of 263 kilometres.
The smooth and linear power delivery also allows the MG ZS EV to go from 0 to 60km/h in 3.1 seconds.
Naturally, charging the car was a major area of focus for MG Motor and the MG ZS EV comes with the standard CCS2 socket located behind the grill.
This socket can connect to everything from a household socket to the quickest 350kW DC supercharger.
When plugged into an ordinary household socket, the MG OSEV will require overnight charging while a supercharger can provide 80 per cent battery level in just 45 minutes.
Onboard is MG Pilot which includes a range of drivers safety technologies including adaptive cruise control, front collision warning, emergency breaking, speed assist and lane departure warnings.
Inside is an 8-inch colour touchscreen which includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, six-speaker surround sound audio plus satellite navigation, keyless entry and the panoramic sunroof that covers 90 per cent of the roof – one of the largest in its segment
On the safety side, the MG ZS EV has already achieved a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating thanks to its high strength cabin and torsional rigidity of the chassis design.
