Huawei powers the new smart connected experience at Metricon Stadium

Metricon Stadium, home ground of the Gold Coast Suns AFL team, is now one of the smartest grounds in Australia thanks to a new smart app and high-speed wi-fi network by Huawei.

The smart stadium app will give fans at the game an all-new connected experience with information and convenient features at their fingertips.

It was launched yesterday by Suns CEO Andrew Travis and Huawei Australia chairman John Lord.

The Metricon Smart Stadium app provides a digital experience for fans at the game and gives them access to behind-the-scenes content during the match along with other game-day information.

Also available on the app is ticketing information and upgrade offers.

Fans will even be able access food and beverages on the app and receive discounts and specials on game day.

And every one of the fans in the 27,500 capacity stadium will have free access to high-speed wi-fi.

Metricon Stadium implemented the Huawei Agile Stadium Solution, created in partnership with Fujitsu, that’s designed especially for large stadiums.

The three-month install process involved the positioning of 378 base stations around the arena behind seat bays and in the roof structure to provide consistent wi-fi coverage to every person in attendance.

“The stadium app is a great win for Metricon Stadium, the Gold Coast SUNS and importantly, our guests,” said Gold Coast Suns CEO Andrew Travis.

“Our unique stadium model has helped us lead the way with our physical match day experience, and this now gives us the opportunity to extend that into the digital experience through the app.”

Huawei launched the Agile Stadium Solution in 2012 and is now creating wireless network projects for sport stadiums around the world.
These include Germany’s largest stadium Signal Iduna Park which has a capacity of 81,359 and is home to Borussia Dortmund and the Amsterdam Arena – the Ajax Amsterdam home ground.

“Following successful deployments of Huawei’s Agile Stadium Solution in Europe, we are very proud Metricon is our first stadium in Australia and has now become the first fully connected smart stadium in Queensland,” says Huawei Australia chairman John Lord.

“These are exiting times for GC Suns fans as our high performing and high-density wi-fi network provides excellent service for tens of thousands of spectators and reaches speeds far beyond the industry average.”

Huawei has also partnered with digital sports content provider FanPlay to stream video to fans starting with Glasgow Ranger’s Ibrox Stadium in Scotland.
