Google has upgraded the search experience with the rollout of AI Mode in English for Australian users which means you can ask complex questions that would normally require multiple searches.
And, of course, with a complex search you also get a complex AI-powered response in plain English and additional web links to explore even further.
AI Mode can handle more complex and multi-layered searches.
The example Google offered with the AI Mode announcement was about understanding the different coffee brewing methods.
The query also asked to make a table to compare the differences.
And that’s exactly what it did with brewing methods, taste profiles, ease of use and equipment needed.
The new AI Mode was tested with queries that are three times longer than normal searches and the responses showed it is up to the task.
It can now be used to suggest and plan a travel itinerary or understanding complex instructions.
For example you could ask: “Create a walkable itinerary for my friends and I in Melbourne this Saturday. We want to cafe hop at some lesser known specialty coffee shops, visit art galleries, and see local street art.”
And then, “What are some local food spots that we can get along the way for lunch and dinner?”
To process these more complex searches, AI Mode breaks the question down into subtopics and issues a few additional searches on your behalf to find the relevant content.
AI Mode’s Multimodal abilities allows users to interact naturally with their voice, a written search or by taking and uploading a photo.
AI Mode uses Google’s core quality and ranking systems to improve factuality but you will still see a set of web search results when there isn’t the highest confidence in the AI-powered response.
Google is also determined to provide access to a diverse range of sources with links to web sites used to shape the response.
When people click through to these websites, they will be higher quality clicks meaning users will probably spend more time on the sites they visit.
