OS X Yosemite for Mac available now for free, iOS 8.1 available Monday
Apple’s latest OS X operating system for Mac computer – Yosemite – is available to download today and the best news is it’s free.
Also available from Monday will be an iOS 8.1 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
The new OS X Yosemite software for iMac and the MacBook laptops adds a whole new look and feel as well as a number of new features.
The interface has a solid makeover right down to the size and weight of the font used system-wide.
Icons and toolbars have also been redesigned and streamlined to give the Mac a real facelift.
Feature-wise OS X Yosemite is brimming with new additions including an enhanced Spotlight and Notifications plus Continuity which connects your iPhone to your Mac like never before.
You can now use your iMac as a speakerphone to answer and make calls on your iPhone as well as to send and receive SMS messages.
Hand Off is another handy new feature that allows users to start a task on your Apple device and continue it on another.
For example, you might have started a document or an email on your iMac but have to leave to meet someone but you can still continue the task on your iPad or iPhone on the move.
OS X Yosemite also has Instant Hotpot that can remotely activate Personal Hotspot on your iPhone if your Mac needs to connect to the network when no wi-fi is available.
AirDrop is also possible between iOS 8 and Yosemite so you can now share files between Macs and iPads and iPhones.
Also included with OS X Yosemite is iCloud Drive to make it possible to access documents and files from the cloud on any device.
Customers who have been part of the OS X Yosemite Beta program simply have to install the final update to have the complete and final product. Other users can download and install the entire package from today.
iOS 8.1 will be released on Monday and Apple has taken some feedback from customers on what should be included.
One of these is the Camera Roll which disappeared with iOS 8 much to the horror of some users who thought they’d lost all of their photos.
Other new features will include access to Apple Pay which will be available in US stores but also for Australian customers when making online purchases.
Another new feature is iCloud Photo library which means any picture you have or take will be made available on any device.
iOS 8.1 will be a free download when it becomes available on Monday.
