Your phone’s browser can now do things that used to need an app. Health tools are quietly moving there, and privacy is a big part of the reason.
Most of us have a folder on our phone full of health apps we downloaded once, used twice and forgot. A step counter, a sleep tracker, the meditation app from a New Year’s resolution. Each one wanted an account, notification permissions and a slice of storage, and most now sit untouched.
Meanwhile, the humble web browser has become far more capable than most people realise. A growing number of health tools now run entirely inside it: no app store, no install, and often no account needed to get started. For one-off health questions, that shift makes a lot of sense.
What changed in the browser
Three developments did the heavy lifting. First, browsers gained secure, permission-based camera access, so a web page can use your phone camera much as an app does, and only after you tap “allow”. Second, technologies such as WebAssembly let complex software run inside the browser at close to native speed. Third, newer graphics interfaces such as WebGPU, now arriving across the major browsers, give web pages access to the phone’s graphics processor, which is exactly the hardware AI models lean on.
Put together, a website can now take a photo, run it through a trained AI model and return a result within seconds, in the same Safari or Chrome you already use. Some tools do that processing on the device; others send the image to a cloud server. Both approaches work, but the difference matters for privacy, and we’ll come back to it.
Why health tools suit the browser
Health questions are often occasional and a little private. You notice something at 9pm, you want a quick sense of whether it’s worth booking an appointment, and you don’t necessarily want a new app on your home screen reminding you about it, or a family member spotting it on the shared iPad.
Browser tools fit that moment. There’s nothing to install, nothing to uninstall, and closing the tab ends the session. For anyone wary of handing personal data to yet another app, fewer permissions and no mandatory account are a genuine advantage, not just a convenience.
Skin checks: the obvious Australian use case
Nowhere is this more relevant than skin. Cancer Council Australia estimates that two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70, and the country has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Most of us have at least one mole or spot we keep half an eye on.
AI skin screening is one of the more mature examples of browser-based health tech. Tools such as ScanSkinAI let you photograph a spot with your phone camera and receive an AI-generated screening result in the browser, without downloading anything. These tools are designed as wellbeing and screening aids: a structured prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis. They can’t examine your skin in person, feel its texture or take your medical history, and they don’t replace a skin check with a GP or dermatologist.
Where they can help is in the in-between moments: turning a vague worry into a clearer decision about whether to book in, and making it easier to keep a consistent photo record of a spot. Change over time is one of the main things skin cancer awareness campaigns ask people to watch for, and a regular set of photos makes change far easier to notice than memory does.
What to check before you use one
- Where does the image go? Look for a clear statement on whether photos are processed on your device or uploaded, and how long they’re kept.
- Who’s behind it? A named company, a readable privacy policy and a contact address are the minimum.
- What does it claim? Be wary of any tool that promises a diagnosis or quotes headline accuracy figures. Reputable screening tools are careful to say what they are not.
- Lighting and focus matter. Natural daylight, a steady hand and the spot filling most of the frame. A blurry photo gives any AI a harder job.
- It’s a prompt, not permission. If a spot is new, changing, bleeding or simply worrying you, see a doctor regardless of what any tool says.
The bigger picture
The app store isn’t going anywhere. For things you use every day, such as the companion app for a smartwatch or fitness ring, a native app still makes sense. But for occasional, private health questions, the browser has quietly become the better home: less to install, less to manage, and fewer places for your data to end up.
For Australians heading into another summer, that makes it a small but genuinely useful piece of tech: a quick, private way to take a closer look at your skin, and a nudge to book the skin check you’ve been putting off.
