Telstra has sent more than 55,000 messages during the testing phase of its satellite to mobile messaging service which will be available to customers in the coming months.
Telstra has partnered with SpaceX’s Starlink to harness its network of low earth orbit satellites as a way of enabling connectivity so mobile customers can send and receive messages across the vast Australian continent.
While Telstra says it has coverage to 99 per cent of the population that means where people live.
What most people wouldn’t know is that more than 60 per cent of the Australian land mass has absolutely no cellular coverage hence the reason to bring the satellites into play.
Telstra says it has sent more than 55,000 messages during the live trial across Australia in remote areas well outside Telstra’s towers in the Northern Territory, Western Australia, Queensland and NSW.
Messages sent also included GPS coordinates and emojis via text message.
