Apple customers spent $10 billion on apps in 2013

Apple announced its customers spent more than $10 billion on the App Store in 2013 with $1 billion worth of apps downloaded in December alone.

The three million apps downloaded in December makes it the most successful month in the App Store’s history.

This now takes the total amount earned by developers since the App Store opened in 2008 to more than $15 billion.

There are now more than a million apps in the App Store with more than 500,000 designed especially for the iPad.

“We’d like to thank our customers for making 2013 the best year ever for the App Store,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services.

“The lineup of apps for the holiday season was astonishing and we look forward to seeing what developers create in 2014.”

With iOS 7 introduced in 2013 there were many major apps like Evernote, Twitter, Facebook, AirBnB, Tumblr and Pinterest that were redesigned to work with the new operating system and updated interface design.

The hit apps of 2013 included Ellen Degeneres’ Heads Up, ProtoGeo’s Moves, Simon Fillip’s Afterlight and Kevin Ng’s Impossible Road.
