Nokia has unveiled one of the most rugged smartphones you can buy – the XR20 – which is built to handle anything from being dunked in water, drops, extreme temperatures and with one of the strongest glass screens on a mobile device.
The Nokia XR20 offers 5G connectivity and will be priced at $879.
It is available to pre-order now at JB Hi-Fi and comes with a three-year warranty, four years of monthly security updates and three years of OS (operating system) upgrades.
Nokia call the XR20 a life-proof phone and it can withstand drops from a height of 1.8m and being dunked underwater for an hour.
Yet despite its rugged design, the XR20 is still housed in a sleek chassis with a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus screen – among the toughest glass ever manufactured.
The Nokia XR20 has a 6.67-inch display with a 20:9 aspect ratio with a dual rear camera system (48-megapixel and 13-megapixel) and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera.
Onboard is 6GB RAM, 128GB of internal storage, dual SIM support and a microSD card slot.
“We know that Australians spend millions of dollars repairing their damaged phones each year, and we are thrilled to introduce the Nokia XR20 – a device that has been designed to endure everything from the daily hustle and bustle to more extreme conditions,” says James Robinson ANZ country manager, HMD Global.
“Nokia has always been synonymous with durability and build quality. Our phones last but with the launch of the Nokia XR20 we’ve taken it that step further. This device is truly life-proof.
“Recently, HMD Global’s research found that nearly three quarters of Australians would keep their phone for longer if their device was maintained over time.
“Our newly refreshed X-Series provides people with products that they can love, trust and keep for longer.
“The Nokia XR20 is our latest innovation to join the X-Series range and will provide customers with peace of mind knowing that it comes with four years of monthly security updates, an industry leading three year warranty and three years of OS upgrades, making it completely future proof.”
To test the durability of the Nokia XR20 Brazilian football legend Roberto Carlos and world champion freestyler Lisa Zimouche put the device to the test.
Carlos recreated his famous banana shot from 1997 Brazil v France match to test the XR20’s durability.
Nokia placed three XR20s on a goal post for Carlos to hit in a freekick shootout.
“I’ve been asked to recreate my ’97 free kick many times over the last twenty years, but never like this before, so I had to accept the challenge,” Carlos said.
“Surely a mobile phone couldn’t survive the wrath of a football. I didn’t think the Nokia XR20 could have withstood the power of my kick. I may not be professional anymore, but I know I still pack a punch, so it was an impressive result.”
The Nokia XR20 will go on sale on August 12 at JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks online, Harvey Norman, Big W (online), The Good Guys (online) and nokia.com/phones
