More than a million Android accounts have been compromised by malware called Gooligan that has been hidden in various Android apps and exposes your personal information, photos email and your documents.
Gooligan has been spread through third party Android app stores and, once onboard your device, it generates an authentication token that can be used to install other fraudulent apps to boost the in-app ad revenue of those titles.
That same token also gives hackers access to related Google account data like your Gmail accounts, Google Photos, Google Docs and your Google Drive.
But the main motive for the hackers is not to steal information, which they easily could, but to boost the ad revenue for their operators.
Gooligan will also post fake app reviews on your behalf as well to encourage other people to install these infected apps.
According to Check Point, the security researchers who discovered the breach, the affected devices have been running Android Jelly Bean (4.3), KitKat (4.4) and Lollipop (5.0).
HOW TO FIND OUT IF YOU ARE INFECTED WITH GOOLIGAN
Check Point has a free online tool where you can simply type in your Google account’s email address to see if you have been breached.
WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU’VE BEEN INFECTED
If you’re email address comes up as being affected then you’ll need to a clean installation of your Android operating system.
This is quite a complicated process so Check Point recommends you take it to your mobile service provider and request it to be “re-flashed”.
And once this process is completed, make sure you change your Google account passwords.
