The GEO Playbook: How Australian brands can optimise for Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT search

For more than two decades, the standard playbook for Australian businesses online was straightforward: identify target keywords, optimize metadata, acquire authoritative backlinks, and compete for a spot in Google’s “ten blue links.”

That paradigm has fundamentally fractured.

With the rollout of Google AI Overviews and the rise of conversational answer engines like ChatGPT Search and Perplexity, search engines are shifting from navigational directories to synthesis engines. Instead of presenting users with a list of external destinations to evaluate, large language models (LLMs) parse the web in real time, extract key facts, and deliver direct, conversational answers.

For digital marketers and business leaders across Australia, this shift presents a new challenge: Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO). To remain visible, brands must learn how to earn recommendations and citations directly inside AI-synthesized answers.

What is Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)?

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of structuring, writing, and technically delivering website content so that it can be accurately crawled, ingested, and cited by generative AI engines.

While traditional SEO focuses on maximizing organic rank positions and direct page clicks, GEO focuses on information gain and citation share. It’s structuring and adding information to a webpage that improves the chances that an AI agent selects your brand (or page) as a primary source when answering user queries.

The Princeton GEO benchmark

Optimizing for generative engines is not guesswork. The foundational rules were empirically established in a landmark study led by researchers from Princeton University, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI, and IIT Delhi, titled, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization.

The researchers evaluated approximately 10,000 queries across multiple domains to measure which on-page adjustments caused generative engines to cite and attribute sources most frequently.

The study revealed two vital insights:

  1. Specific GEO tactics increased content visibility inside AI responses by up to 40%.
  2. Traditional keyword stuffing failed completely, actually decreasing visibility inside conversational engines by 10% below the baseline.

The strategies that yielded the highest attribution gains were:

  • Statistics Addition: enriching content with verified quantitative data)
  • Cite Sources:  adding direct citations to credible third-party benchmarks
  • Quotation Addition: including authoritative expert commentary.

The 4 pillars of a GEO strategy that works

To capitalize on these dynamics, Australian companies need to modernize their search architecture across four distinct technical areas.

1. Inverted pyramid / Direct answer formatting

Generative crawlers read web pages under strict latency budgets. If a scraper must read through 800 words of introductory preamble to find an answer, the LLM will skip the page in favor of a more direct competitor.

  • The Fix: Place a direct, declarative answer of 40 to 60 words immediately beneath your <h2> or <h3> headers. Follow that summary with bulleted specifics, practical criteria, and data points. This provides the AI scraper with a clean, pre-packaged snippet ready for extraction.

2. Entity-based semantic structuring

Traditional crawlers establish trust by understanding index strings of text. In contrast, LLMs assess a brand’s reputation by evaluating entities and the semantic relationships between them. Entities refer to distinct people, places, organizations, and concepts. It assesses a brand’s reputation.

  • The Fix: Move beyond basic schema. Implement comprehensive JSON-LD markup that maps your organization to clear entities. Use AboutPage, ItemPage, FAQPage, and sameAs schema linking directly to verified databases, which includes your Australian Business Number register, LinkedIn profile, and industry bodies. This helps language models disambiguate your brand from global namesakes.

3. Machine-readable data tables

LLMs process structured HTML far more efficiently than long paragraphs of text. When benchmarking products, listing pricing, or presenting operational workflows, plain HTML tables consistently outperform narrative prose.

Feature / MetricTraditional SEO FocusGenerative Engine Optimisation (GEO)
Primary goalTop 3 organic ranking on Google SERPInclusion & citation within LLM synthesis
Optimization focusKeyword frequency, backlink volumeReputation and associations, information gain, statistics, entity clarity
Content structureLong-form, conversational proseDirect answers, semantic HTML, structured tables
Primary metricOrganic impressions, click sessionsCitation frequency, qualified conversion rate

4. Technical crawl access for modern AI agents

Many businesses inadvertently block generative engines from reading their content. When companies update their robots.txt files to safeguard data against AI model training, they often accidentally block the real-time search crawlers that generate live search citations.

  • The Fix: Audit your server logs and robots.txt directives. Ensure your site allows real-time retrieval bots, including Google-Extended, GPTBot, and PerplexityBot, access to public-facing informational guides, while keeping sensitive proprietary data protected behind authentication walls.

Winning brand citations in Australia

The implications of AI search are particularly pronounced for Australian mid-market companies and service providers.

When a user in Melbourne or Sydney asks ChatGPT or Gemini, “Which cybersecurity consultancy complies with the Australian Essential Eight framework?”, the engine does not output a directory of 50 links. It synthesizes a short list of two or three validated providers.

To be chosen, a business must demonstrate local consensus. LLMs verify corporate entities through third-party mentions, including regional media outlets, local industry directories, and authenticated customer reviews. If an AI model cannot triangulate your brand across external sources, it will default to citing established competitors.

Implementing comprehensive AI search optimisation is no longer a forward-looking experiment. It is the baseline required to preserve brand discovery in an ecosystem dominated by zero-click interfaces.

The 5-point GEO audit checklist

Before publishing your next digital asset, run it through this operational checklist:

  • Clear header-to-answer hierarchy: Does every sub-header answer the search intent within the first two sentences?
  • Proprietary data: Does the page contain original statistics, survey findings, or benchmarks that cannot be scraped elsewhere on the web?
  • Verified attribution: Are technical assertions backed by outbound references to academic papers, regulatory standards, or recognized industry benchmarks?
  • Valid schema implementation: Has the page been validated using Google’s Rich Results Test for appropriate JSON-LD structured data?
  • Clean HTML Markup: Are key comparisons housed in standard HTML tables rather than complex JavaScript accordions or embedded images that scrapers cannot parse?

Citations over clicks

The transition toward generative search engines does not mean the end of organic traffic, but it fundamentally redefines its value.

While top-of-funnel, casual informational queries will increasingly be resolved directly within the search interface, users who follow source citations out of an AI summary do so with significantly higher commercial intent. They have already evaluated the synthesis; they are clicking through to verify credentials, request quotes, or initiate transactions.

Australian businesses that adapt their content architecture to the principles of GEO today will secure the institutional citations that define market leadership for years to come.
