Belkin’s WeMo devices can now be controlled by Android users
Belkin’s WeMo range of home automation products is now compatible with Android devices bringing the convenience to a huge group of new users.
WeMo products allow users to automate their home appliances and consumer electronics so users can turn them on and off remotely through the WeMo app on their smartphone.
When launched last year, the WeMo app was only available for iOS on Apple’s iPhone and iPad but now Android devices running version 4.0 of the operating system and above can now take control.
The WeMo Switch is like an adaptor plug that allows the device that is plugged into it to be controlled with the WeMo app.
Belkin has also released a WeMo Motion sensor that can be added to the set up.
When the sensor detects movement it can send a wireless signal to the switch to turn the attached device on or off.
Users can add multiple switches and sensors and create their own home automation solution.
Once the WeMo units are connected to a home network it is possible to control them within your network using wi-fi and even remotely from anywhere in the world either on wi-fi or over the cellular network.
WeMo also works with IFTTT (If This Then That) a site that specialises in creating triggers for wireless devices.
One example of a WeMo rule created by IFTTT is the ability to send the user a text message whenever their WeMo Switch and Sensor detects motion.
The free WeMo app for Android is available now from the Google Play Store.
Belkin’s WeMo Switch is priced at $59.95 while the pack with the WeMo Switch and Motion sensor is priced at $119.95.
