WD My Net N900 Central combines a wireless router with hard drive

wdfmynetn900cWestern Digital is well known for producing external hard drives but its latest product – the My Net N900 Central – has gone a step further and added a wi-fi router to the mix.

Available in 1TB and 2TB capacities, the My Net N900 Central combines the convenience of an external hard drive with wireless access which can be used both for streaming content and also for backing up computers on your network.

The device itself is not much larger than a regular modem – it’s about the size of a trade paperback book.

On the rear are five Gigabit Ethernet ports to connect your other devices like desktop computers, gaming consoles, Blu-ray Disc players and set-top boxes.

There’s also a USB port to connect another external storage device and make it accessible to other devices on the network.

The My Net N900 Central is a dual band device, which means it can create a 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz network with the ability to recognise and prioritise content like HD movies, videos, games and voice and video chat.

This prioritisation ensures smooth wireless movie and video playback at speeds of up to 450Mbps on each band.

The WD My Net N900 Central comes with software to make it easy enough to set up a wireless back-up system for computers on your network. It can even support Apple’s Time Machine back up system on the Macs on your network.

And because the device sits within your network it’s easy to access that content using other wireless devices including smartphones and tablets.

But the My Net N900 Central can also be set up as your own personal cloud storage system with the ability to access your content from inside your network and from outside it remotely.

This way your content is safely stored at home but is still accessible using dedicated apps for iOS and Android from anywhere you have a connection to the internet.

Setting up the device was impressively simple. Windows users are walked through an installation CD and through a browser on a Mac. You can even set it up wirelessly using an iPad.

The My Net N900 Central is priced at $399.99 for the 1TB version and $499.99 for the 2TB version.
