Samsung’s 2019 smart TV range will be the only televisions in the world to include iTunes so customers can buy or rent movies and TV shows directly from their 4K TV.
The iTunes Movies and TV Shows app, as well as support for Apple AirPlay 2, will become available on the new Samsung TVs in the coming months.
Customers who purchased a 2018 Samsung smart TV will also be able to enjoy these new features via a firmware update.
“We pride ourselves on working with top industry leaders to deliver the widest range of content services to our Smart TV platform,” said Won-Jin Lee, Executive Vice President, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics.
“Bringing more content, value and open platform functionality to Samsung TV owners and Apple customers through iTunes and AirPlay is ideal for everyone.”
This partnership between Apple and Samsung will allow Samsung customers to access their existing iTunes library as well as browse the iTunes Store to buy or rent movies and TV shows.
iTunes at present has the largest selection of 4K HDR movies.
iTunes on Samsung’s TVs will also work with the television’s smart features including Universal Guide and the new Bixby and Search to maintain the experience across Samsung’s platform.
And with AirPlay 2 support, users will be able to play content from their Apple devices – the iPhone, iPad and Mac – to their Samsung smart TV.
“We look forward to bringing the iTunes and AirPlay 2 experience to even more customers around the world through Samsung Smart TVs, so iPhone, iPad and Mac users have yet another way to enjoy all their favourite content on the biggest screen in their home,” said Eddy Cue, senior vice president of Internet Software and Services at Apple.
To view iTunes content on a Samsung TV previously would have required the customer to purchase an Apple TV and link their iTunes account to the device.
With this latest announcement, anyone purchasing a 2019 Samsung TV or updating their 2018 Samsung TV, will be able to enjoy the same iTunes experience – but without the need for an Apple TV.
Samsung will be the only TV manufacturer to offer the new iTunes Movies and TV Shows app on its TVs in more than 100 countries.
AirPlay 2 support will be available on Samsung smart TVs in more than 190 countries.
