After teasing it in New York a couple of weeks ago, Samsung has officially unveiled its latest smartwatch on the eve of the IFA tech trade show in Berlin – the Gear S2 which has a circular design and new personalised mobile user interface.
The circular smartwatch is available in two models – the Gear S2 and the Gear S2 Classic – and has a unique rotating bezel along with separate home and back buttons.
Each is just 11.4mm thick with a 1.2-inch circular Super AMOLED display with a resolution of of 360 x 360 and 302ppi (pixels per inch).
It is powered by a 1Ghz dual core processor and is running the wearable version of the Tizen operating system that also runs on Samsung’s TVs.
Samsung says the device’s battery can last between two and three days and it can be charged with the included wireless charging dock.
The Gear S2 will offer 3G connectivity thanks to an onboard eSIM to allow voice capability even when it is not paired with your smartphone.
The device can relay notifications like texts, emails, calendar reminders with the ability to respond from your wrist.
It is also a handy fitness device with a 24-hour activity log to view your daily progress and patterns.
The Samsung Gear S2 includes a heart rate sensor as well as an accelerometer, a gyroscope and even a barometer to give you a better idea about the weather.
Developers are already hard at work creating apps that will suit the circular screen and provide a unique user experience.
“For the past several years, Samsung has pioneered and advanced the wearables category, bringing brave new concepts to the smart wearables market,” said JK Shin, CEO and Head of Samsung’s IT & Mobile Business.
“The Samsung Gear S2 reflects Samsung’s most progressive innovation. It is the perfect complement for any occasion, easily taking you from day to night, from work to workout—and ensuring that you get more out of every moment in your day, by making it smarter and ultimately more personal and fun.”
The Samsung Gear S2 will be available in two colour schemes – dark gray case with a dark gray band and silver case with a white band.
The Samsung Gear S2 classic will be available in a black case with a Leather band.
