TECH GUIDE’S HANDS-ON LOOK AT THE iPHONE 11 and iPHONE 11 PRO

The iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone 11 will be available for preorder on Friday, September 13 and will go on sale on September 20.

Pricing for the iPhone 11 starts at $1,199 while the iPhone 11 Pro will start at $1,749 and the iPhone Pro Max at $1,899.

“iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are the most powerful and advanced smartphones we have ever made,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.

“They are packed with sophisticated technology that pros can count on to get their work done, and for anyone who wants the very best device made, even if they are not a pro.

“iPhone 11 Pro has the first triple-camera system in iPhone and is far and away the best camera we’ve ever made, it provides our customers with great range of creative control and advanced photo and video editing features in iOS 13.

The Super Retina XDR is the brightest and most advanced display in iPhone and the A13 Bionic chip sets a new bar for smartphone performance and power efficiency.”

Apple has seriously upped its camera game to now include a triple lens system with the iPhone 11 Pro and a dual lens system with the iPhone 11.

The iPhone 11 Pro is made from surgical grade stainless steel with a matte textured finish available in green, silver, black and gold.

The iPhone 11 Pro will be available in the same screen sizes as the iPhone XS –  5.8-inch and 6.5-inch while the iPhone 11 sits in between with a 6.1- inch Liquid Retina LCD display.

The iPhone 11 Pro has been upgraded with a Super Retina XDR display with spatial audio and Dolby Atmos 3D sound.

On the performance side, the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro are powered by the A13 Bionic chip – the fastest CPU in a smartphone.

Graphics performance has also been dramatically improved and enables remarkable gameplay with the latest graphics-heavy titles.

The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max have been upgraded with the triple lens Pro Camera system which includes a 12-megapixel telephoto lens, a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens and a new 12-megapixel super wide-angle lens with 120-degree field of view.

Coming soon in a software update will be Deep Fusion that uses machine learning and the neural engine to combine four images shot before you press the shutter, one long shot when you press the shutter and another four shots afterwards and combine then in a second to produce a stunning image.

For video, Apple has also stepped up its offering with the iPhone 11 Pro with dedicated camera apps like Filmic Pro that will even allow users to shoot video from the separate lenses at the same time.

The iPhone 11 is made from anodised aluminium and comes in six colours – black, white, red, yellow, purple and green.

On the audio side the iPhone 11 also supports Dolby Atmos.

The iPhone 11 has a dual camera system with an ultra-wide 120-degree camera to capture even more landscapes and the scene around you.

The image pipeline has also been updated with a new rendering feature that accentuates HDR (high dynamic range).

Portrait mode has also been extended to the ultra-wide camera.

Night Mode is a new feature on all the new iPhones that will activate automatically to dramatically improve images in low light.

On the video side, the iPhone 11 also offers 4K with improved stabilisation at up to 60 frames per second and with extended HDR across both cameras.

On the front is a 12-megapixel TrueDepth camera with slow motion – “slofies” – available through the front camera the first time.

Apple says the battery life of the iPhone 11 will offer an hour more than iPhone XR.

On the security side the TrueDepth camera on the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro used for Face ID has been enhanced for faster unlocking.

And not only is it faster it also has a wider field of view to capture your face  and unlock the iPhone from further away.

That means you can unlock your iPhone when it’s laying on your desk with Face ID without having to pick it up.

One rumoured new feature –  Apple Pencil support –  did not materialise so the only Apple device you can use with Apple Pencil is still the iPad.

One feature that has been removed is 3D Touch but in its place will be haptic feedback and long presses to replace the 3D gestures.

Under the hood, the new iPhones will also support the latest and fastest Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) which is up to 4 times faster than the current 802.11ac.

The new iPhones have also retained their Lightning ports after strong suggestions Apple may have switched to USB-C as it did with the iPad Pro.

On the battery side, the iPhone 11 Pro will offers up to five hours more battery life than last year’s iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.

The iPhone 11 Pro will now also support 18W fast charging.

The iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max will be available for customers to preorder on Friday, September 13 and will officially go  on sale on September 20.
