Google’s annual I/O developer conference has kicked off and includes updates for Gemini, a new AI mode for Google search with more agentic abilities and an update on the Android XR software for smart glasses.
GEMINI
The Gemini app continues to grow and develop with a range of new features like Imagen 4 to generate images faster with improved image quality along with Veo 3 video generation complete with sound effects and native audio generation.
Gemini will also now be included in the Chrome browser on Windows and macOS to make it easier to ask questions while surfing the web and help summarise and explain complicated information on any web page you’re looking at.

Google also announced a new premium plans called Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra.
These will be available initially in the US only with pricing starting at $US19.99 and $US249.99 per month respectively
These are aimed at power users who want to ramp up their Gemini app experience and tap into Gemini’s advanced features and the best models before anyone else
GEMINI LIVE
Gemini live – Google’s AI powered voice assistant – is now free for Android and iOS users and allows even more access to the latest AI features for all users.
Like other assistants, Gemini Live will listen out for your commands and can also combine input from your phone’s camera to complete your searches and queries.
Gemini Live will also have an agent-like capability to not only search the web but also to make phone calls and gather information on your behalf.
Gemini will also become part of Google’s suite of productivity apps including Gmail where it can come up with personalised smart replies after using AI to learn your personal writing style.
AI MODE
AI Mode is a new default search feature for Google which is designed to answer more intricate search queries and give better results across the board.
But it also now can answer even trickier queries which might take several questions to complete.
Google’s new AI Mode can also help you shop with a new search tool.
After you tell Google what you’re looking for it will then offer a range of images of products to provide inspiration and narrow down the search until it finds the product you want to purchase.
If you’re shopping for clothes there is even a try-on mode which lets you see what the clothes look like on you after you upload an image of yourself.
ANDROID XR
Google has been touting an Android virtual reality operating system for some time with Google Gemini at its core so you can interact with your surroundings in a completely different way.
Users would be able to use Google Maps even more easily to find their way and immediately identify products in store and compare prices just by looking at them.
The word is that Android XR operating system will be used with upcoming smart glasses from Samsung, Xreal, Warby Parker and Gentle Monster.
