A new free iPhone app by popular wine brand Jacob’s Creek has been launched that can measure the number of standard drinks in a glass of wine
This follows the alarming news that 86 per cent of Australians don’t know what constitutes a standard drink.
The Wine Line is a world first app which uses augmented reality to accurately determine how many standard drinks are in any given glass of wine.
Users can do this simply by pointing the iPhone’s camera at the glass in question and tracing the outline of the wine it contains before choosing the type of wine.
The app comes pre-loaded with more than 70 different wines from the Pernod Ricard Australia portfolio including Brancott Estate, Wyndham Estate and GH Mumm.
It can also track how many drinks you’ve had in a certain time period and help properly ascertain the amount of alcohol that’s been consumed.
The Wine Line is part of the Premium Wine Brand’s initiative to educate consumers on the responsible consumption of alcohol.
A study carried out on behalf of Jacob’s Creek by Galaxy Research revealed that only 14 per cent knew there 1.5 standard drinks in typical glass of wine.
54 per cent thought a normal 150ml serve of wine contained less than 1.5 units of alcohol (1.5 standard drinks)
And 32 per cent didn’t know how many units were in a 150ml glass of wine.
“Our business is strongly committed to promoting the responsible consumption of alcohol,” says Jean-Christophe Coutures, Premium Wine Brands’ CEO.
“We see it as our responsibility as a major producer of wine not only to communicate on this important topic, but to think creatively and develop innovative offerings to consumers. I am pleased to say that this has been achieved with The Wine Line application.
“This is the latest in a series of initiatives developed by Premium Wine Brands. We were one of the first businesses to commit to include pregnancy labelling on all of our products.
The Wine Line is a free app for iPhone and is available in the App Store now.
