It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas and technology gifts are going to be high on a lot of people’s wishlists.

Starting today Tech Guide is kicking off the 12 Days of Christmas series that looks at a new product category every day.

Here are the Tech Guide 12 Days of Christmas.

Today on Day 1 we take a look at smartphones.

DAY 1 – SMARTPHONES

Smartphones will be a popular gift choice this Christmas – especially affordable pre-paid devices that offer plenty of features and great value.

ALCATEL ONETOUCH VIEW 5.0 – BOOST MOBILE $99

In terms of bang for your buck it’s hard to go past the Alcatel OneTouch View 5.0 from Boost Mobile.

The device has a 5-inch screen with a resolution of 854 x 480, a 5-megapixel camera and a quad-core 1.3Ghz processor.

Running on the Telstra 3G network through Boost Mobile, the View 5.0 is 9.9mm thick, weighs just 160g and is running the Android Jelly Bean operating system.

There’s 4GB of internal memory along with a microSD card slot to expand the capacity even further.

NOKIA LUMIA 830 – $496

The Nokia Lumia 830 brings a lot of compelling features to the table to make it one of the most interesting and affordable smartphones on the market.

The Lumia 830 is nicely designed with a sharp 5-inch display with rounded edges that merge into an aluminium chassis.

Running Microsoft’s latest Windows 8.1 operating system, the Lumia 830 has 16GB of internal storage a microSD card slot to that gives users the option of increasing that by up to 128GB.

There is 10 megapixel PureView camera with OIS (optical image stabilisation) and Zeiss optics that captures excellent images and full high definition videos.

And it’s all connected to OneDrive – Microsoft’s cloud storage solution – so all of your photos, videos, music and documents are literally at your fingertips.

KOGAN AGORA 4G+ – $239

Kogan has always been a company that offers a lot of value with their products and the Agora 4G+ is no exception.

The Agora 4G+ has an eye-catching 5-inch IPS (in-plane switching) screen with a high definition resolution of 1280 x 720.

On the rear panel is a 13-megapixel camera while under the hood you’ll find a 1.2Ghz quad-core processor with the device running the Android KitKat operating system.

There’s 2GB RAM onboard to make multitasking easier with 16GB of storage with the ability to expand that with a microSD card.
