In a world-first, the new free Freeview FV app is now available for users to watch live TV from 16 free-to-air channels as well as access catch up content anywhere and on the go.

The app is free to download and use for iOS (iPhone and iPad) and also for Android smartphones. It will be available for Android tablets in 2017.

Live streaming channels available from launch includes ABC, SBS, Seven, Channel 9, TEN, ONE, ABC2/ABC KIDS, ABC ME, ABC News 24, 7TWO, 7Mate, 7Flix, Racing.com, 9Gem, 9Go! and 9Life.

And more live channels will be added to this list when they become available.

Users can also access on-demand content from one place including SBS On Demand, ABC iview, PLUS7, 9Now, and Tenplay.

So this means users can view live TV and catch-up TV all from within the same app instead of having to jump in and out of several different apps.

The Freeview FV app allows users to also browse and search all free-to-air programs, access a free-to-air TV guide and also set reminders and favourites.

The app takes a look at what you’ve been viewing and offers recommendations so you can also discover new programs as well.

“This is a fantastic new way for consumers to enjoy TV on their terms and never miss a thing, especially when they’re on the go and away from home,” says Freeview CEO Liz Ross.

“The Australian FTA industry has united to create and deliver a powerful mobile consumer experience – in no other market has an FTA industry collaborated to create its own live streaming app.”

The app will no doubt have a strong appeal for commuters who will now be able to catch their favourite live shows and catch up programs on a train or bus.

When it comes to live sport, Freeview FV will mirror the network’s sporting rights agreements.

For example, if Channel 9 has the digital rights to broadcast live NRL matches you will be able to watch those matches through the Freeview FV app.

Freeview FV is a free app that can viewed on 3G/4G networks or wi-fi.

But if users are streaming on the go on cellular networks they should be aware the app uses 200MB per 30 minutes.

There is a setting to opt for a lower resolution stream to reduce the amount of data the app uses as well.

IPhone and iPad users will be able to mirror the Freeview app on their TV using AirPlay but Android users will not be able to replicate this with Chromecast at launch.

Users will also not be able to record any programs but the program they choose to watch with Freeview FV will also count towards the viewer ratings.

Freeview FV is available now from App Store and the Google Play Store.
