President Donald Trump, or at least his family business, has launched a new mobile service and plans to release a smartphone later this year that was designed and built in the US.
Trump Mobile will offer a monthly plan which is priced at $47.45. Why that price? Donald Trump was the 47thand 45th President of the United States.
The Trump Organisation, run by President Trump’s sons Eric and Donald Jnr, is focused mainly on real estate and development but they are behind Trump Mobile.
On offer is the 47 Plan (about $A70) which offers unlimited calls, texts and data (20GB at full speed) along with international calling to more than 100 countries (including unlimited calls to Australian fixed and mobile number) plus device insurance, roadside assistance, unlimited telehealth access 24/7, mental health and wellness support and prescription discounts.
Trump Mobile uses the T Mobile network in the US.
And Trump will also create a smartphone – the T1 Phone which is gold and etched with the US flag on the rear panel.
It will be available in August and will be priced at $US499 ($A770).
The device will be running Android 15 and will have a 6.78-inch screen with 256GB internal storage that’s expandable through the memory card slot, 12GB RAM with in-screen fingerprint security and AI Face Unlock.
On the camera side, the T1 Phone will have a 50MP main camera, 2MP depth sensor, a 2MP depth sensor and a 16MP selfie camera.
It will also have a 5000mAh battery.
Trump Mobile says the phone will be designed and assembled in the US but we suspect most of the internal components will be shipped in from China.
President Trump has already stated that any phones sold in the US that aren’t made in the US will attract at least a 25 per cent tariff.
This will particularly impact one of America’s biggest companies – Apple.
Apple reportedly moved its production for devices that will be sold in the US to India in a bid to sidestep Trump’s high tariffs for products imported from China.
But now it faces yet another tariff that may drive iPhone prices through the roof.
