Tech Guide has taken an eyes-on look at Amazon’s new AI smart glasses that are designed to make it easier for delivery drivers to get your packages to your doorstep.
The AI enhanced smart glasses look like regular glasses with a built-in camera and a display in the right lens that puts important information in your eye line.
I had to wear a vest which is where the battery and controllers are located.
These are connected by two cables to magnetic clips on the back of the glasses.
The dial on the vest is the controller and the button.
When I put the glasses on, I could see through them like regular glasses.
One twist of the dial and the text appeared in the lenses.
The text was sharp and easy to read despite the fact the display was right in front of my eye.
It was an address and a small map showing the home, the entrance location and the warning that there was a pet on the property.
Generally the delivery instructions from a customer is what is displayed in the notes that appear in the glasses.
When a driver arrives at the delivery location, the glasses are then used to scan the packages.
I was given the same task and it was simple as looking the packages to read the barcodes and confirm the packages for that location.
In my demo, I scanned three packages for the address and a big tick indicated I had picked up the right parcels for delivery.
The main benefit is that driver doesn’t need to rely on their phone.
The AI smart glasses allow you to operate hands free while still being able to observe your surroundings and watch out for any dangers or obstacles.
The next step was to actually deliver the package.
There were a few fake home fronts set up for the demo and I placed the packages on the doorstep.
My next job was to take a photo for proof of delivery and I was able to do that through the glasses as well.
I pressed the button at the centre of the dial and it took a photo as I was looking at the packages.
And I could see instantly the photo I just took.
The delivery was completed and the customer notified.
The fact that drivers now have both hands free to carry their parcels means they can work quicker and more safely.
Usually they have to juggle parcels and their phone but now Amazon’s AI smart glasses has changed all of that.
In typical Amazon fashion, they talk to the people for whom the new product is designed to assist and take their suggestions and feedback onboard to create a solution that fits them rather than having them fit an existing solution.
