Polestar has set a Guinness World Record for the longest trip by an electric SUV on a single charge after travelling 935.44km in a recently launched long range single motor variant of the Polestar 3.
The Polestar 3 was pushed to its absolute limits in the record attempt which took 22 hours and 57 minutes to complete.
The record was achieved in mixed weather conditions including rain at one point with the polestar 3 achieving an efficiency of 12.1 kWh/100 kilometres.
One of the biggest things holding back potential EV drivers is range anxiety but this demonstrates EVs can deliver the distances they promise.
Recently the Australia Automobile Association Found popular models fell well short of their advertised range by up to 23 per cent.
These models included the Tesla Model 3, the BYD ATTO3 and the Kia EV6.
The Tesla Model 3 had up to 14 per cent range variation, the Kia EV6 had 8 per cent range variation but the biggest difference was with the BYD ATTO3 which had 23 per cent range variation achieving 369km with an advertised range of 480km.
For the Polestar 3’s record attempt there was no modifications made to the car for the attempt which was run on standard 20-inch wheels fitted with standard Michelin Sport 4 EV tyres.
There were also three professional efficiency drivers on hand to switch every three hours so they could maintain alertness.
The Polestar 3 reached its WLTP (World Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure) figure of 706km with 20 per cent of its battery capacity remaining.
It also delivered an additional 12.8km after the display showed 0 per cent battery.
“We are very proud to say we have a world record holder in the Polestar family,” says Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller.
“This official Guinness World Record for range is another proof point that Polestar 3 is setting new standards.
“We will continue to push the boundaries of technology and electric performance.”
The production standard SUV was checked by Guinness World Records judge Paulina Sapinska while Web Fleet offered meticulously documented and independently verified video footage, odometer readings, GPS readings and battery level data.
The record attempt was also supported by the AA roadside assistance to maintain safety and to also offer power if the vehicle ran out of battery and was not near a charger.
“While the drivers pushed the Polestar 3 to the boundaries of its range capability, it goes to show how battery range has improved exponentially over the past few years,” says Matt Galvin, Polestar UK Managing Director.
“For a large premium SUV to go way beyond a London to Edinburgh distance is truly impressive and with this the adage that ‘EVs can’t go far’ has been very much consigned to the history books.”
