OPPO has launched the Find N – its very first foldable flagship smartphone – the result of four years of research and development and six generations of prototypes.
The device was unveiled at the OPPO INNO Day showcase and offers an all-new approach to the foldable smartphone form factor along with an updated user experience which will appeal to users who are new to this type of design.
“New form factors are ushering in an exciting new time in smartphone technology,” says Pete Lau, Chief Product Officer of OPPO.
“OPPO has invested a significant amount of time and effort into coming up with a better approach to a foldable smartphone, experimenting with a range of form factors, hinge designs, display materials and aspect ratios, to create a new device that meets the needs of more users.
“With the OPPO Find N, we aim to change people’s perceptions about what a smartphone can offer and begin making foldable devices more accessible to an even larger audience.”
The OPPO Find N Has a landscape ratio for the inner 7.1-inch display with a 5.49-inch outer display that offers a complete smartphone experience just like a regular device.
Design wise, it is a passport shaped device which, unlike the Samsung Galaxy Z fold 3, has a shorter but wider front screen.
The OPPO Find N has a 3D curved design on both outer edges while the back cover and rear camera module continue that fluid curve first seen on the OPPO Find X3.
Inside is an 8.4:9 aspect ratio with a landscape mode which is suitable to watching videos, playing games or reading books without the extra step of rotating the device.
When folded, the 18:9 aspect ratio offers a familiar smartphone experience with a screen that is easy to use with one hand.
The secret sauce lies in the Flexion Hinge on the OPPO Find N which brings together 136 components with the precision of up to 0.01mm to ensure the hinge works as smoothly as the joints in the humas body.
It has a unique waterdrop hinge design which creates a minimal crease that is 80 per cent less noticeable compared to other similar devices.
This hinge also eliminates the gap between the displays when the device is folded for a slimmer look and better protection of the inside display.
The Flexion Hinge can be unfolded at any angle which means the OPPO Find N can rest between 50 and 120 degrees.
The onboard apps take advantage of this feature including music, notes and camera apps so we it be used as a mini laptop or serve as his own tripod when shooting 4K HD images, for video calls and online meetings.
The display is made of a 0.03mm layer of Flexion UTG (ultra-thin glass) compared to 0.6mm for regular smartphone glass which means it can be easily bent while providing durability.
OPPO’s custom 12-layer Serene Display offers protection and durability to work with the Flexion Hinge for a smooth folding experience.
The inner screen uses an LTPO display with a smart dynamic refresh rate technology which will take the refresh rate up to 120hz based on what you’re watching on the screen.
The inside 7.1-inch display has a 60 per cent larger visual area than a regular 6.5-inch screen which creates a better viewing experience for your content and even more possibilities for multitasking and productivity.
Users can simply use two fingers to swipe down on the middle of the device to split the screen in half or convert a full screen window into a floating window by pinching it with four fingers.
On the camera side, is a 50-megapixel Sony IMX 766 main sensor, a 16-megapixel ultra-wide and a 13-megapixel telephoto lens as well as selfie cameras on both the inner and outer displays.
The split camera interface on the OPPO Find N allows users to take photos on one side and view share or delete them on the other.
When taking photos from the main camera with the display unfolded, you will see both the inner and outer displays so you and your subject can preview the shot at the same time.
The device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 mobile platform with 12GB RAM and 512GB of storage with a 4500mAh battery.
Also on board is a side mounted fingerprint scanner housed within the power button and a dual speaker system and support for Dolby Atmos.
But before you get too excited about the OPPO Find N, it will only be available in China from December 23.
There is no word on whether the device will be available in Australia, the US or Europe.
