Samsung’s new Galaxy S22 series pushes the limits of performance and photography

Samsung has just unveiled its new flagship Galaxy S22 series of smartphones – the S22, the S22+ and the S22 Ultra – which feature stunning designs and a next-level camera system that pushes the boundaries of smartphone photography like never before.

They will go on sale in Australia on March 4 and will be priced from $1,249.

The Galaxy S22 (6.1-inch display) and S22+ (6.6-inch) provide a stunning flagship experienced offering power, performance and Samsung’s most intelligent camera to date.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

The new Galaxy S22 Ultra (6.8-inch) brings the same features to the table but also adds the power of the popular Note series and, for the first time ever, a built in S Pen which is now more responsive than ever before.

“With the Galaxy S22 we are anticipating the needs of tomorrow with the technology we’re bringing to market today,” says Samsung Australia Vice President, IT & Mobile, Garry McGregor.

“The S22 series includes three unique flagship models that meet the premium priorities and personal preferences to empower and connect our customers.

“S22 and S22+ bring the best for those who want to create – dynamic cameras, enhanced image processing and bright displays make for a beautifully designed and powerful smartphone.

The S22 Ultra brings the very best of S Series and the DNA of Note together in a whole new experience. The built-in S-Pen is set to unleash new productivity and creative possibilities.

“We know Australians’ smartphone usage has increased by 40 per cent after another year of prolonged pandemic living.

“Because of this and extended working from home arrangements, 44 per cent of people purchasing a new smartphone are buying premium because they need higher performance devices.”

CAMERA

One of the most exciting features of these new devices is the dynamic cameras with advanced intelligent image processing.

With even larger sensors under the hood, the S22 devices can all produce incredible photos in low light situations.

Samsung calls this “nightography” which sees the largest sensor and adaptive pixel technology draw out even more light, detail and colour even in the dark.

Both the Galaxy S22 and S22+ include a powerful 50-megapixel main camera, a 10-megapixel telephoto lens and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens.

They also include a 10-megapixel front facing camera with an 80-degree field of view.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has four cameras made up of a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, 108-megapixel wide camera, 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and a second 10-megapixel telephoto camera.

On the front of the S22 Ultra is a 40-megapixel camera with an 80-degree field of view.

On the video side, all of the S22 smartphones include auto framing which can detect and track up to 10 people in the frame and automatically adjust focus so it captures everyone clearly.

Advanced VDIS technology also keeps vibrations to a minimum so your footage is smooth and sharp even on the move.

These new devices also come equipped with Samsung’s latest AI technology which can optimise your photos like never before.

When using portrait mode, the new AI stereo depth map can bring your subjects out of the background with never-before-seen detail and clarity.

And yes, portrait mode on the new Galaxy S22 series will work on your pets so you can always get the best shot of you beloved fur babies.

The Samsung S22 Ultra has an advanced super clear glass lens which comes into play to take smooth and clear night-time videos.

The device also packs in a 100X zoom (combining optical and digital zoom) to get you even closer to the action.

Another advanced camera feature of the S22 Ultra is the ability to save photos in RAW format up to 16-bit so you can have even more control of your image’s data when you’re editing.

DESIGN

The new S22 and S 22+ has remained faithful to the S series iconic contour cut design that blends the camera system on the rear panel seamlessly into the devices housing for a sleeker and more sophisticated look.

This time the S22 camera housing matches the colour of the device’s body unlike last year’s S21 which created a contrast look.

The S22 and S22+ will be available in Phantom Black, Phantom White, Green and Pink Gold.

They have also been built with durability in mind and are the first S series devices made with armour aluminium.

These are the first S Series devices to include new Corning Gorilla Glass Victus front and back, so you won’t have to worry about accidental drops.

The S22 Ultra has taken over the mantle of the Note in terms of design, speed and performance.

Design-wise, the Galaxy S22 Ultra has a premium and luxurious look and feel with a streamlined design.

The camera system on the rear panel is integrated seamlessly to the metal frame.

The device will be available in Phantom Black, Phantom White, Green and the new Burgundy.

DISPLAY

The Galaxy S22 and S22+ have Dynamic AMOLED 2X Adaptive 120Hz displays that are 6.1-inch and 6.6-inch respectively.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra has a stunning 6.8-inch display with a peak brightness of 1750 nit.

And all the devices include the new Vision Booster technology that can automatically adjust the display based on the lighting conditions as well as enhancing the colour contrast so you can see the best possible view no matter where you are viewing or what time of the day it happens to be.

PERFORMANCE

Even on our busiest days, the Galaxy S22 and S22+ have been designed to power you through with the first ever 4nm processor on a Galaxy smartphone.

This is what powers the device’s AI and ML (machine learning) processing.

The result is a stunning performance for all your streaming, photography and productivity needs.

The device is also smart enough to analyse your behaviour and streamline your app performance to determine the necessary power required resulting in a smooth performance with your streaming, browsing the web or navigating apps.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra offers the same processor but also includes Wi-Fi 6E which is up to twice as fast as Wi-Fi 6 so you’ll notice an improved performance when using your apps playing your games, streaming and working.

The Galaxy S22 and S22+ have a 3000mAh and 4500mAh battery capacity respectively while the Galaxy S22 Ultra packs in a 5000mAh battery.

Every device in the range offers all-day battery performance so you can easily get through an entire day and make it well into the next before you need to reach for the charger.

Speaking of charging, the Galaxy S22 supports up to 25W charging while the S22+ and the S22 Ultra can handle up to 45W wired charging.

PRICING

The Samsung Galaxy S22 will be priced from $1,249, the S22+ from $1,549 and the S22 Ultra from $1,849. Memory capacities start at 128GB and go up to 256GB for the S22 and S22+ while the S22 Ultra starts at 128GB and 256GB, 512GB and 1TB variants.

None of the S22 smartphones have expandable memory.

All are dual SIM (physical SIM and eSIM).
