Speechify vs NaturalReader vs CastReader and Two Free PDF Readers

adminBy adminOctober 21, 2026Updated:October 21, 2026No Comments7 Mins Read

If you are already comparing Speechify and NaturalReader, you probably know a PDF can be read aloud. The harder questions are whether you enjoy the voice, whether a long document is comfortable to follow, and whether the subscription earns its place among your regular expenses. Basic playback is only part of the decision.

CastReader is an affordable option to add to that comparison. It reads text-based PDFs with highlighting and speed control, while also covering Kindle and web reading. On a Mac or Windows computer, it works through a browser extension rather than a separate desktop reading app. That keeps it close to the browser you already use for research and reading.

Here is how CastReader, Speechify, and NaturalReader compare with two free choices: Adobe Acrobat Reader and Microsoft Edge. The focus is personal reading, not commercial voiceovers or video production. Each takes a different approach to getting material into a player and making it easier to follow.

Five options at a glance

Tool Main attraction Best suited to Price reference
CastReader Natural voices, highlighting, and Kindle support Lower-cost everyday listening Pro: $4.99/month or $35.99/year
Speechify Voices and document imports across platforms Reading from several sources Premium: $29/month or $139/year
NaturalReader OCR, reading filters and pronunciation settings More control over document reading Lite: $13.90/month or $79/year
Adobe Acrobat Reader Basic read-aloud in an existing PDF tool Desktop Acrobat Reader users Basic reading is free; no Pro required
Microsoft Edge PDF playback in the browser Occasional desktop listening Free built-in feature

Prices are official website prices in US dollars, checked on October 9, 2026. Annual plans are paid upfront; regional and app-store prices may differ. The three subscription products also offer free access, with voice availability and allowances varying by plan.

CastReader makes everyday PDF listening more affordable

CastReader Pro costs $4.99 a month or $35.99 a year. Against Speechify Premium’s $139 annual price, it is an attractive option for someone primarily buying a way to listen to text. The cost difference is clear; the next question is whether your own PDFs are pleasant to listen to and easy to follow.

CastReader reads PDF text in natural, flowing voices, with a choice of voice and playback speed. Long passages in course handouts, research papers, and industry reports can be listened to directly. Highlighting shows the current position, so a sentence you want to reread is easy to locate. There is no need to produce a separate audio file simply to hear the document.

On a computer, install the Chrome or Edge extension and open a text-based PDF for listening. You can follow the document while controlling playback, without switching between the text and a separate audio file. The page forCastReader’s PDF read-aloud feature shows how to get started and includes a demonstration.

Voice cloning adds a personal option: read a sentence when prompted to create a version of your own voice for other material. You do not have to record the contents of the document. It complements the natural standard voices with a familiar sound. If you would rather hear the content explained than read word for word, you can choose Read & Explain.

Its usefulness extends beyond PDFs. The same product can read work documents during the day and Kindle books or web articles later. Phone and tablet apps are available when you want a mobile option. For someone who reads both documents and books, that can remove the need for separate reading subscriptions. Try your material on the free tier before deciding on a plan.

Speechify brings different reading sources together

Speechify’s attraction is its range of reading inputs. PDFs, other documents, web pages, and text captured from scans can all become listening material. It has products for mobile and desktop use, while Premium adds natural voices, scanning, and other AI features. Existing users may find PDFs fit neatly into the same product they already use for other reading.

That variety has practical value if your reading comes from paper, web pages, and files stored in several places. Look at how your most common material reaches the player, and whether the voices you prefer are included in the plan you would buy. Those details matter more in daily use than the total size of a voice library.

If you already subscribe and regularly use the broader feature set, there is no reason to switch merely for the sake of it. If most sessions consist of opening a PDF and pressing play, however, comparing the same document in CastReader is worthwhile. A more expensive plan is not automatically a better fit for a narrower reading need.

NaturalReader offers more document controls

NaturalReader supports PDFs and other documents, with features such as OCR, pronunciation editing, and reading filters available according to the personal plan. These are relevant if you regularly listen to scanned material, want to skip page numbers, or need more control over the pronunciation of recurring terms. Its appeal is partly about preparing documents for a better listening experience.

Whether those features justify paying depends on your files. Text recognition matters when scanned pages are a regular source of reading. Pronunciation settings may help when the same specialist vocabulary appears repeatedly. If your PDFs already contain selectable text and your priority is straightforward playback, compare a simpler option too rather than treating every document-processing feature as essential.

Keep the comparison within personal reading plans. Licensing for published commercial audio addresses a different need and should not inflate the budget for listening to papers or handouts yourself.

Adobe Acrobat Reader can read documents aloud too

Acrobat Reader’s Read Out Loud can read the current page or continue to the end of a document using text-to-speech voices available on the system. This basic feature does not require Acrobat Pro. It is worth checking if Reader is already where you open PDFs on your computer.

The immediate advantage is avoiding both another subscription and a move to a different reading product. For an occasional report or a few pages of notes, the existing feature may be enough. If listening becomes a regular habit and you want to explore more natural voice options, dedicated TTS products will be easier to evaluate after that first trial.

Microsoft Edge reads PDFs in the browser

Edge’s desktop PDF reader opens local and online files, with Read Aloud providing highlighting, voice choices, and speed adjustment. For Windows or Mac users who mainly listen at their desks, it is a direct, free starting point. The browser can handle an extra part of the reading task without a separate subscription.

There is no plan to choose or library to reorganize before opening a document. If you later want regular book listening or a dedicated mobile reading app, consider products covering those needs. Free desktop playback and a specialist reading app do not have to be mutually exclusive choices.

Compare the document you actually need to read

Use a real PDF and listen to several paragraphs, not just one demonstration sentence. Notice whether the voice is comfortable, the pace is easy to follow, and returning to the written text feels straightforward. Those details are more revealing when you need to get through a lengthy report than a feature checklist alone.

For occasional listening, Acrobat Reader and Edge provide free starting points. For scanning or more varied imports, examine Speechify and NaturalReader. If natural narration, clear highlighting, and lower ongoing costs matter most, with Kindle and web reading alongside PDFs, put CastReader near the top of the shortlist. A tool that makes today’s document easier to read is a better purchase than a larger feature set you rarely use.
