Google unveils new Pixel 5 smartphone, Nest Audio smart speaker and redesigned Chromecast

Google has today launched a range of new products – the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G smartphones, the Nest Audio smart speaker and the all-new Chromecast with Google TV.

The products were unveiled at the Launch Night In virtual event which showcased the new devices and the software and AI that go with them.

PIXEL 5 – $999

The Pixel 5 has a 6-inch flexible OLED FHD+ display with HDR support and a resolution of 1080 x 2340 and a contrast of 1,000,000 to 1.

The device is 5G compatible and can also be used as a 5G hotspot to connect all of your other devices on the move.

There are now two cameras on the rear panel – a 12-megapixel dual pixel and a 16-megapixel ultra-wide – so you can shoot stunning images in all scenarios including low light situations and the night sky.

There is also a front 8-megapixel camera that peeks out from the hole punch on the display.

With HDR10+ onboard, the devices automatically enhances the colour and lighting in your images so they always look their best.

And the ultra-wide lens now lets you take that even further so you can capture some impressive vistas or fit more people in the frame.

The onboard 4,000mAh battery is also built to run for two days thanks to the new Adaptive Battery feature that learns your favourite apps and reduces power to the ones that you rarely use.

It also has fast charging capabilities and wireless power sharing so you can charge other phones or headphones by resting them on the rear of the Pixel 5.

The device is also water resistant.

Pixel 5 will be available in two colours – Just Black and Sorta Sage – and goes on sale in November.

PIXEL 4A 5G – $799

The Pixel 4a with 5G has larger 6.2-inch FHD+ OLED display and a larger 3,885mAh battery.

It also has the same camera as the Pixel 4a – 12-megapixel dual pixel.

It will also go on sale in November.

NEST AUDIO – $149

The Nest Audio is Google’s latest smart speaker which is 75 per cent louder and with 50 per cent more bass than the original Google Home.

It has a 19mm tweeter and a 75mm mid woofer that adds up to some impressive sound.

The Nest Audio speaker can be integrated alongside the Google Home, Nest Mini or Nest Hub speakers as part of a multi-room audio set-up which can be grouped or controlled individually.

Nest Audio has embedded machine learning to make Google Assistant even more helpful; and responsive.

The speaker has a pretty slim design but still produces a large sound. It will be available in two colours – chalk and charcoal.

CHROMECAST WITH GOOGLE TV – $99

Chromecast with Google TV has an all-new thin and compact design.

It still plugs into your TV’s HDMI port and is now capable of streaming 4K HDR video at up to 60 frames per second with support for Dolby Vision and passthrough for Dolby audio content.

There is also a new-look remote control that also includes a microphone to enable voice control of your viewing.

Also onboard is a dedicated Google Assistant button so it can take on the features of a smart speaker as well and provide access to information as well as controlling your smart devices and lights and monitoring wireless security cameras.

Chromecast with Google TV will be available from October 15.
