Rode has released a major firmware update for its impressive Rodecaster Video that unlocks several new features including NDI (network device interface) support to enhance multi-camera production and live streaming.
The new enhancements also include PTZ (pan tilt zoom) camera control, advanced keying tools and enhanced workflow options to offer even more flexibility with multi-camera and network-based video production.
When me and Trevor Long film the Two Blokes Talking Tech podcast each week, we use the Rodecaster Video to link and control the three cameras and the microphones.
With NDI it allows for high-quality, low latency video-over-IP streaming so the Rodecaster Video can receive up to four NDI inputs and send out one NDI output via Ethernet.
This means you can connect cameras and smartphones and other NDI-compatible devices if they are on the same network.
The update also adds NDI support to the Rodecaster Capture iOS app to wirelessly integrate iPhones into the production as a multi-angle NDI source.
The Dual Cam features enables users to film from the front and back iPhone cameras at the same time as separate feeds or a combined view which are ideal for interviews.
“This update takes the Rodecaster Video into an entirely new league,” says Damien Wilson, Rode CEO.
“By adding NDI at no cost, we’re giving creators the kind of network-based production power that was once reserved for high-end broadcast systems.
“Now, it’s accessible to anyone. Pair this with advanced PTZ camera control, precision keying tools, and a host of workflow enhancements, and the Rodecaster Video reaffirms itself as the most versatile production solution for creators.”
Also included in the firmware update is PTZ camera control for compatible NDI cameras so users can frame their shots and change their angles remotely in real time.
Luma Key makes it possible to remove black backgrounds from input sources, overlay lower thirds, titles and animations.
With the Key Mask it’s now possible to remove unwanted edges and add softness in shadow controls for more professional chroma and luma keying.
Another new feature is being able to use an input as an overlay which is ideal for creating picture in picture or persistent graphics.
There is also enhanced auto switching through the Rodecaster Pro 2 and Duo which can link audio channels to specific camera angles which will switch when the audio is heard through that microphone.
This new Rodecaster video firmware update is available now as a free download via the Rodecaster app.
