SanDisk iXpand is a USB flash drive for your iPhone and iPad

SanDisk has released the iXpand USB flash drive that’s been designed to work exclusively with Apple’s latest iPhones and iPads and includes a built-in Lightning connection.

Available in 32GB and 64GB capacities, the SanDisk iXpand has a protective metal casing and plugs directly into the iPhone or iPad to allow users to view pictures and videos and listen to music directly from the drive.

Apple has never – and will never – included a microSD memory card slot on the iPhone so adding and saving content is a lot more involved.

That’s what makes SanDisk’s iXpand such an attractive device for iPhone users who want more flexibility with their content and how they get it on and off their device.

The device makes it possible to transfer photos and videos from the iPhone or iPad to a Mac or PC without cables or an internet connection.

The Lightning connection is located on the front of the iXpand USB flash drive on the end of a short flexible cable.

The cable has enough leeway to pull it away from the body of the device to easily connect to the iPad or iPhone.

And once connected the Lightning cable clips into place securely so the device can easily be carried around while still attached to the phone.

At the other end of the iXpand is a regular USB plug so it can connect to a computer to transfer content.

There’s also an iXpand companion app which provides a dashboard to view the content on the iPhone or iPad directly from the device.

It can also be configured to automatically sync your new photos and videos from your iPhone or iPad camera roll to iXpand USB drive.

The iXpand drive can play numerous video formats including AVI and WMV.

This saves the user from having to convert their videos to MP4 – the format that plays natively on the iPhone and iPad.

Files on the drive can also be password protected whether they are viewed on the iPhone or iPad or on a Mac or PC.

Also onboard is a rechargeable battery to give the SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive its own power to operate rather than taxing the iPhone or iPad it is connected to.

ixpand2

The SanDisk iXpand US flash drive is available now from Officeworks stores and is priced at $129 (32GB) and $179 (64GB).

I bought one based on this review and it’s been excellent. A great way to transfer files away from iTunes and I use it to save on data while using dropbox. Yes I know I can favourite using dropbox but this is just easy.
