Amazon has announced an updated version of its Kindle Paperwhite eReader which includes improved contrast, a faster processor and new reading features.
Pre-orders for the new device starts today ahead of an October 1 release.
The bestselling device now boasts a number of enhancements including new display technology that provides better contrast to make it even closer to the look of a printed page.
Also included with the display is new touch technology which makes the Kindle respond to even more accurately to touch to help avoid accidental page turns.
The built-in light has also been improved and directs light into the device while reducing eyestrain.
Kindle Paperwhite’s new processor is 25 per cent faster than the previous model so books open quicker and pages turn faster.
New reading features include Page Flip so you can scan page-by-page and chapter-by-chapter through a book.
Page Flip also makes it easier to move back and forth to a map, for example, if you happen to be reading one of George RR Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire Books including Game of Thrones and the latest novel A Dance With Dragons.
Vocabulary Builder lives up to its name and lets you compile a list of words you come across in your reading into an easily accessible list.
Smart Lookup lets you find the meanings of words, find out more about characters and locations without leaving the page you’re reading.
In-Line Footnotes gives you easier access to footnotes and links without losing your place in the book.
The new Amazon device will still have its usual long battery life – up to eight weeks on a single charge – along with either built-in wi-fi or 3G.
The Kindle Paperwhite will be priced at $US139 for the wi-fi only model and wi-fi + 3G for $US199.
