It was only a few short years ago when we dreamed of being able to slip a full high definition camcorder in our pocket.

Today that scenario is a reality and the Toshiba Camileo S30 is a great example.

The device is only slightly longer and thicker than an iPhone but it can capture 1920 x 1080 video, take 16 megapixel stills and has a 3-inch LCD flip out screen.

Also onboard is 16x digital zoom, video stabilisation and HDMI out to watch videos on a larger flat screen TV.

And because the Camileo S30 is built for travel it is also easy to share your videos online as well.

The device is quite small – 10.6cm high, 5.9cm wide and just 1.9cm thick. It also weighs just 120g making it about the same size and weight as a smartphone.

There are several recording modes to add some quality and variety to your recordings.

Toshiba's Camileo S30These include macro mode for close-ups, motion detection for surveillance and time lapse. My favourite was slow motion mode which is good for shooting sport or any other scene you want to shoot with flair.

The quality of the video captured by the device was excellent and even looked good when displayed using the HDMI out connection to a plasma or LCD TV.

All of the camera’s features are all accessible on the 3-inch LCD touchscreen while physical controls like zoom, record and pause are all within easy reach.

The device has a fixed focus lens which means there is no need for auto focus. Although this wasn’t a problem when shooting normal scenes it did affect some of my shots in macro mode when shooting small objects up close.

Still images were also impressive thanks to the S30’s 8 megapixel CMOS sensor. Users are able to dial back the resolution from 16 megapixel pictures back down to 8 megapixel or 3 megapixel to fit even more pictures on the memory card.

Video is captured on an SD memory card up to 64GB which is enough for 10 hours of full high definition video.

The Camileo S30 is powered by a battery that can be charged with the included charger or with a USB 2.0 cable when connected to a computer. The battery gave us hours of use before we even had to think about charging the device.

The Toshiba Camileo S30 is a handy product for anyone who wants to capture high quality full HD video without having to lug round a bag full of gear.

Despite its small size it can deliver big results.
